I don't know how much a .22 would do on zombies. From what i've seen in the zombie games and movies, zombies don't really have 'critical points' like brains which just need a little plinking to kill. You usually have to destroy the entire head, in which case I would suggest something along the lines of a nice 12ga shot gun with a mix of buck shot and slugs, as well as a good 'ole fashioned flame thrower.

From my present location in Texas, my plan would be:

I've got the MREs and K-bar already. Use those to get across town to Camp Mabrey and raid the armory there. Once I raid the armory, I will hole up in the Texas Military Museum, where I will plan on sleeping in one of the old tanks, and stow all my critical supplies in the other armored vehicles. I can venture out during the day to retrieve more MREs and ammo from the supply depot on base, and try to hook up with other Midshipmen and Active Duties. From there, we secure ourselves in the museum until the outbreak subsides. If the zombies come in, we shoot as many as we can coming through the doors or windows. If we get over-run, everyone locks themselves in a tank with the MREs. There's air and water, and the zombies aren't going to get in after us! Then it's just a matter of waiting...

It's all about the brain man.  Destroying the entire head is just an overkill way to destroy the brain, you see.  A 22 will kill the brain just fine, it's light and accurate and you can carry way more ammo than larger caliber rifles or shotguns.  Range is also a major factor, distance = safety, the farther away you can keep them away from  you to kill them the safer you are.  If they can't get close to you they can't grab you or bite you or overrun you.  Shotguns have to be much closer to be effective than a rifle.  Also consider that in a close quarters situation where the shotgun would be effective, hits would be spraying a splatter and fine mist of infected material all around, making accidental infections much more likely.  Also you'd have to stop and reload every so often, creating tremendous danger and basically leaving you undefended and helpless for a bit, all the while they're closing in or grabbing you.  At shotgun ranges you'd be way ahead to use the two handed machete, it's silent so you wouldn't attract more with the sounds of your firing, and it never needs reloading.  A decapitation pretty much removes the threat.  While the head is still alive, it can't come after you on its own you see.

Think about your armory plan for a minute man, everyone else has already had the same idea.  All that equipment has already either been shipped out and is being used or been overrun and looted or been overrun by the zombies.  You want a very secure area where you won't be surprised by an unseen threat and lacks open areas new threats could come from.  You'll want a place with fewer people, not more.

Read the zombie survival guide http://www.amazon.com/Zombie-Survival-Guide-Complete-Protection/dp/1400049628  it's got pretty much everything you'd need to know, and will explain in great detail how and why your initial instincts are wrong.  Max has thought this stuff out so much more thoroughly than anyone else ever has already.  The work has already been done, you just need to get educated.  It's a great book too, entertaining, and the recorded attacks section at the end is fantastic.

Holing up is the best form of defence against viral zombies, EG 28 days later and I am Legend.

But for Solanum and Radiation Zombies, or "The Undead" which have no nervous or mobile control. Mobility is the best form of defence as they are slow and easy targets, but are dangerous in large numbers, by keeping mobile you limit exposure to 1 or 2 at a time as different from 10 to 20. Also, Viral turns humans into animals, so they rely on light, sight, smell and sound. Holing up and hiding will work well, and as they are living zombies (I know it sounds dumb) they will starve or dehydrate to extinction once there are no more hosts.

The Undead will remain forever, so steadily killing them 1 at a time, or finding an area with enough resources and weapons and of course survivors to fight off substantial numbers to join on to is the key. If these dont exist as in total subjugation by the zombie hoardes. Run and gun is how its done!

You bring up an interesting point... If you were the only one left on the planet... would you keep fighting for survival? Or would you bite a bullet...

I think personally, if I was the only normal human left in a world of zombies, the loneliness would take hold pretty quickly, and that bullet would be looking real friendly... but thats just me. I don't like being alone.

But how would you really know if you were the last one. That's what would keep me from biting the bullet. I have to agree with Madda, a good .22, like the one Tuk just got, would be perfect. Ammo is abundant and light. I've got a write up of what I'd do, but it's on my other computer. Will post later.

Oh, and cool video!  :aok

Id drive to Mabry and hole up with Serenity, but first I would grab my dads 870, my .22 and my M39 along with all the ammo I can carry

but is the infection that zombies have communicable to say.. fish?

I say no.. but others have argued that I'm wrong.

Were the creatures in I Am Legend zombies or what?

In the original I Am Legend story/book they are vampires.  I haven't seen it, but I heard the movie changed the ending which pretty much ruins the point of the title.

That's right get on a main road! Tupac, aka just another zombie now.. :D

Madda Ilike the idea of a 22 head shots. Just not gonna hack it for close range action. There's always that 1 sneaky zombie that get's through your safety zone.  :uhoh

There is a house on my street that has a deer fence, and is at the top of a hill with a clear 360 degree line of sight. That's where I would go short term, maybe a month. It's 2 stories, and I could black out the windows, and barricade the staircase.

I hit a javelina at 204 yards with my M39, I assume I could do the same thing hitting a zombie.

After I felt it was safe to move, I would grab my M39 and my .22, and start to head into town, looking for other people
