It was his lack of good judgement shown by staying with his plane and trying for friendly lines. It cost him his life. Had he gotten out when the plane was still controllable, he may have been captured but would probably have lived.

Very poor choice on his part and it cost him his life. Does't seem like a decision the 'best fighter pilot of the war' would make to me. I am sure his blind loyalty to Hitler was what compelled him to try though, then he could get more press coverage and shiny things for his pretty uniform....

Maybe if the new prototype plane they gave him didn't farkin have engine issues he could have LIVED :furious

I dont know if he was teh best fighter pilot, but beeing a fighter pilot, you should allways try to be the best, i dont know how anyone could
strip a plane around himself, go up and try to shoot others down without this kind of thinking, everything else would be suicide. Enough said.
