« on: December 24, 2010, 01:16:47 PM »
Have a buddies machne here.

Anyone have an idea why I cant get any CDrom drive to work?
I've tried several including ones I've taken out of working machines. Either the doors wont open or it wont recognize anything as being in the drive

So you have unplug the device (power and drive cable), restart the PC and still nothing works?

If this is the case, then it must be your OS not recognizing the device...

1) You could try restoring PC to an earlier/previous backup date...
2) Using your OS disk to repair your version of Windows..

Goodluck..

If he moved to Windows 7 recently (actually anytime) there is a "Fix-it" from Microsoft:

If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

Thanks. I'll try those out tomorrow when I start working on it again.
Its an old HP Pavilian a520n and they just use it as a spare for business. But its so loaded with cr---junk they installed on it that its as useful as a slug right now and they want me to clean it out and restore everything to its original state so they can start over. I have the restore disks to do it wiith. I just cant get either of the original drives or any of the spare drives I have around here to work in it.

On the original drives. It will see the drives. but wont see anything as being in them.
Any of the other drives I've tried. the light on the drive will flash. But the doors wont even open to install a disk.
Just very weird

If you have Windows Vista, you may have to uninstall the driver, and install a patched one (we had to do this). MANY HP comps had this problem and it sounds much like the same thing. You should be able to find the driver with no sweat, let me see if I can find it. I believe it was a mix of the two (OS and the system, if my memory serves).

When my HD was going bad it wouldn't recognize one of my optical drives. Once it was the new HD was in place and the OS reinstalled I had no issues.

Addendum: I just had one of my DVD drives disappear. I downloaded the firmware and it reappeared.

CC, there was still a problem with the driver that could cause the problem on it's own. It's best if you go ahead and download the new patched driver (Somewhere I heard it will even speed up your comp's ability to read discs... Although I have no first-hand account of anything of the sort. It is just a regular CD-ROM, therefore, I call BS).

Strange part is, the driver that was installed said it was installed in '08, not '10 like it actually was.  :headscratch:
And yeah, I did look at it before and after the install. (Maybe it was just a patch for the previous driver, and no re-install).

I know it is very vague, I'm sorry about that, I hope this helps, though.

Okay, that wasn't the end of the disappearing DVD drive. I finally deleted it from device manager and let windows xp reinstall the drivers. So far so good. I theorize that windows updates may interfere. Further having 2 optical drives may be an issue as well for some mainboards.

As it turns out my optical drive was bad.
