Desperate help required :(
« on: July 11, 2001, 02:54:00 PM »
Hi all,
I've just got my new 1.2 Gig Ath rig (win ME, S3 Graphics card (32meg)) and unfortunatly I'm getting some really bad FR's (as low as 10-15 up to 25 ish) the FR performance gets worse as the resolution increases with 1024x768 being worse than the one above it (12 something)by a clear margin. Is it just a case of a crap graphics card or do you guys think there is something else a-foot. BTW i've downloaded and installed the latest drivers  (including the 4in1 download but I had to disable the IDE something, otherwise my computer wouldn't boot up at all)I also have a Voodoo 3 2000 from my PII300, do you guys think I should put that in instead ?

All help desperatly received and pints will be distributed to those who work this bugger out  :)

Thanks
Samuo1

Throw that S3 away and buy GeForce2 Pro from good manufacturer like Elsa, Leadtek or Guillemot/Hercules. I've seen some quite cheap GF2 Ultra models too.

Right now your system is like Ferrari with only first gear.

ok, if I understand you right you're saying that (as I guessed) my graphics card is to blame, I have a voodoo 3 2000 in my old computer which I can easily use until I get a decent card, will this improve my performance?

Thanks guys
Samuo1

P.S its the AGP version

That S3 card is certainly to blame.  The Voodoo should be faster, but you will be running 16 bit color max.

You need to get at least a GeForce 2 GTS card to see the potental of that Athlon @ 1.2 GHz.

Hi!
I wouldn't buy any cheap GF2 in your system. Correct me if I'm wrong, but GF2 MX will be a bottleneck.
I have P3 933 and elsa GF2 MX 32MB.
I ran winmark 2000 helicopter test with 1280 16bit and medium detail. With default settings I had something like 35 fps.
I then changed (can't remember what feature it was) graphics acceleration(or something) from GF2 to processor. FPS went over 40! So I guess if in my system GF2MX is bottleneck, it sure will be in your system too.
I should buy another videocard, perhaps GF2 GTS or Kyro II 64MB?

I would go after GF2 Pro though if you're lucky you can find GF2 Ultra almost at same price.

In Finnish:
Janneh PC-Superstore (www.pcss.fi) myi aika edullisia Hercules Prophet2 Ultra kortteja.

Nice processor!
I'd say you should buy the fastest video card you can afford, so you can make that CPU work.

Right now its just sitting idle waiting for your S3 video card to catch up.
