This story about  fast magnetic pole shift causing  Tampa,FL runway closure was in news last evening, it could disturb the birds and fish navigation and migration also. But i don't understand why is affecting only this runway aligned North-South , must be 100s of runways all over the world built N-S . Why fix runway and not make corrections to the compass, what difference would it make if a plane is trying to land on a runway aligned East-West  still using a compass based navigation system pointing the North magnetic pole diverted with 3-4 degrees.But imagine a plane or ship navigating 1000s of miles long trips, trans ocean, it can't relay on compas anymore, 3-4 degres off trajectory would bring it maybe 100 miles off destination. Yep, we have radar and GPS.

January 7th, just a few days after fireworks sent birds to their death in AK and a couple days later made birds in LA. fly into a wire we get this news.

Thank the powers that be that this minor pole shift  just affected one airport. Seems a little paint is gonna fix this 10 degree pole shift according to the news. Whew...that was a close one.

I'd get ready for more ....or you could bury your head deeper in the sand for added safety.

Lepape mentioned a 26,000 year cycle, I remember reading an astonomical article about the 26,000 year cycle that says Vega will become the new North Star, instead of Polaris. And that after another 26,000 years it will swing back to Polaris.
I read this one about 50 years, when I was 13, at the Burbank Library.

Bingo! Like the precession of a gyroscope. Mayans MIGHT have lived long enough to notice the variations in the pole stars (1degree rotation every 71years) and were able to draw a circle that lasted roughly 26,000years.

Now go find the relevance between this and all these fishes and birds dying all over the place like it never happened before (sarcasm). That's right... there is none. So why were we even talking about this in the first place?

Lepape2, thanks for the link. Astronomy was a hobby of m ine a long time ago.
As for the 2012 date, somewhere ?, somebody ancient said that is when "The Old Ones" will return from the stars.
Makes me think of "Childhoods End" by Dr. Arthur C. Clarke.

From what I remember reading about Pole Shifts it has alot to do with earths core cooling and slowing, its is a measurable amount and helpful in determining the age of samples taken.  Not so convinced it had something to do with these animals deaths though.

Sort of like many years ago whales would mysteriously wash up on the beach after the navy was supposedly conducting USW sonar testing out in the deep blue.
