I think it's great! Hell, I probably would have turned out a much better kid had my parents put a hand to me a bit more, lol. There IS a line between parenting and abuse, and this is nowhere near it. There are many situations, as guppy said, that can be handled before they arrive through pro-active parenting. (Note this is the UNCLE, not a direct parent) Occasionally though, when a kid gets COMPLETELY out of line like this, he needs a good arse-whooping to get back into the straight and narrow.

Did you know that my pop kicked me to the moon whenever I did stuff like that?

Did you know that by inflicting pain my pop was able to send me a message otherwise incomprehensible to an ignorant kid?

Penguin, the stove is hot, don't touch it!

Agree, when I was younger, if I did something wrong I got the belt, same with my parents....im 19 now and it seems like to many of these kids dont care and dont get punished enough.

"Child beating" as you put it was once common place.

You can decide whether you think children are better behaved, less inclined to violence and criminality and more respectful of others now that your mindset seems to prevail.

So if the mindset is to accept that when you bring a child into the world, it means your number one job is parenting, what's the problem?  I didn't hit my kids and they grew up respectful of adults, understanding there were limits etc.  I'm quite proud of who they are as people.

My wife and I also understood that it was our job to parent our kids which involved listening, setting limits, setting the example for them in how we dealt with the world etc.

To suggest that hitting our kids is the solution to their problems is wrong.  What it says is the parents weren't working hard enough on the front end of parenting so they had to rely on reacting instead.

Is it a crime?  No, but it speaks a lot to lazy parenting in my mind.

I'm 18 years old and was raised like the kid in the video.  When I did something bad (mainly misbehaving, running the mouth, disrespectful things, etc...) I got the belt.  If I had to do it all over and choose what kind of punishment I got, I would pick the belt.  It got me where I am today, and I enjoy getting compliments from adults about how much respect I show and stuff like that.  Kids need punishment, and simply locking them in a room without this our that simply doesn't work these days.  As a kid myself, I admit we're young, dumb, cocky, you name it.  There's no telling how many times I've seen kids of all ages that I wanted to give them a good ole "behind the shed" whoopin' for the way they acted.  What I see in the video is a parent doing his job.  Abuse?  Nope.  Doing it out of anger?  Nope.  Give that man a Klondike bar!

that's it?
I wish my dad gave the belt like that - we were not to move (or you got another) and every swing made full contact.
hell - the dean of boys at our high school gave better swats with his paddle from across his desk than those wimpy hits..just for being tardy to class.

that's constitute getting the belt these days? pathetic. At least the uncle cared enough to try..

I was raised in a traditional English style upbringing living in Australia (Have Dual Nationality)

And I was taught quite simply. You question everything except that which you must not question, and that is authority. If you did disrespect authority you got the crap beat out of you until you did. At least thats what happened to me.

That kid got nothing.  My dad swung a mean belt and occasionally a board.  Mom would make us go out and get her a switch.

I was so abused

I only suffered a few whoopins in my child hood, one from an asst principal.

While it shouldn't be the first go to discipline tool, there are times when it is appropriate.

I applaud the uncle.  In the era I was raised a wooden paddle in school and a belt were a deterant similar to a nuclear device.

We have it.......don't make us use it.  It worked.  The Uncle cared enough for his Nephew to do what he did.

The Uncle knew the possible consequences of "Gang Life".  He did his Nephew a huge favor.  The Nephew will

never forget it.
