Maj. Winters is not gone. He has just been recalled to duty with his unit. May his reunion be joyful as he rejoins those that went before and as he awaits the rest yet to be called.

Thank you sir. Rest in peace.  :salute

Not even a blip about it on the big name news oulets. Shame on them.
Compare that to when that freak Michael Jackson died.

Farewell Maj. Winters.

I am embarrassed for modern media.  Their freedom is secured by guys like Maj. Winters.  I say this without exaggeration: all of our lives would have been very different were it not for Maj. Winters and his brothers-in-arms.

Gotta see if I can say this right.  I don't think Richard Winters would have minded.  Those that really knew him and cared about him know of his passing.  He didn't like the celebrity and all those that tried to take a piece of him based on a TV series.

I think it safe to say that it bothered him that so many folks missed the point.  He didn't do what he did for medals, glory or fame.  I would guess he's been warmly welcomed by those who went before him going back to those kids who didn't get to live the full life he did.

The best way to honor him is to teach the history to your kids.  I don't mean E/506 but all those guys and gals who have sacrificed over the years for the sake of the rest of us.
It is common in personal histories for survivors of war to wonder why they got a long life and some of their comrades did not.  One of the interview sequences in the “Band of Brothers,” one of the real life heroes says something like “I’m not a hero.  He heroes are buried over there.”  (Pardon the paraphrase.)

My late father was a sailor on the USS Hornet (CV-12), and he met a veteran from the USS Franklin (CV-13) sometime in the 1990's.  My dad held this guy in high regards as a hero.  The other man deferred to those who didn't make it.

D-Day skins all around for the flyby I would say.  I might even fly the striped birds for the rest of the week.
