Advice on a new graphics card

If you saw this thread, you know that I believe my graphics card is shot.  So I want to start looking (waiting until Monday morning for Skuzzy to confirm my card fears) for a new one. 

Basically I'm just looking for a card that is equivalent to my previous one, a NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT.  I did a quick search at newegg for the same card and I get a big list of different ones, none of which look like mine. 

Card suggestions or tips for what I need to look for in a card?  Need to know anything else about my computer? What do I need to know about my computer?  I'm very naive with this stuff.  Money isn't a big consideration, I don't want to spend a ton, but I want at least an equivalent card.

The wattage on the PS would be a start. Also what MB and cpu?

 If you go ATI make sure you clean the nividia drivers out.

Like Cryptic said...what is your PS and how much do u want to spend?  You can get another 9800GT or so for $100 or step up a bit to a 460GTX card for about $160.  This is staying with nvidia.  of course there are other options if u want to spend $200!  and have the PS to use it!  Dpending on your monitor and the resolution you run you may want a card with at least 1GB of memory..the larger the screen size the better this is...

These what you needed?  Monitor is a 20in LCD, and a second monitor is a small acer, no plans on updating either of those any time soon.  As I said in the first post, I'm okay with what I've got, as tempting as an upgrade is, I don't think I need it for what I'm doing.

You can get the EVGA GTX 460 superclocked for about $190 which is what the 9800 GTX is going for on Amazon.

I just ordered an EVGA 012-P3-1470-AR GeForce GTX 470 (Fermi) 1280MB from Newegg and that was due to some artifacts starting to show up in my monitor with my EVGA GTX260.

So far all is good it runs cooler that my EVGA 9800gt is alot quieter and I can max out the settings on games I play.
I haven't overclocked it yet but it has plenty of potential.The MSI afterburner utility is much better than EVGA precision.

Personally I should have read a little more or at least opened my eyes a little more. With the nVidia 5xx series cards out they are faster than the 4xx series and the prices are about the same as well. I should be getting my GTX470 today and then will hit the "Step Up" program from EVGA to get myself a 5xx card. I honestly don't know how I missed the announcements on the 5xx series.

I have 2 of the PNY GTX 470's in my rig sli'd and you will love it. A single one handles all the eye candy almost maxed out at 2080 textures, of course mine is because I am using triple 23 inch monitors, video quality is great.

I haven't put it in the system yet but I am going to tonight. I have to get my HDMI connection cable to make it look good on my Samsung P2770 27" monitor. This sucker already does well when the GTX260 is working fine but when I put that on its going to be much better.

If all you want to do is replace your 9800 GT these are all 9800 GT's ($60-$115).  I'd go with PNY or XFX out of these if I were you:

The mini HDMI cable is a little stiff so if I were you i would figure a way to support it or the regular HDMI cable itself, don want to put any strain on your card.

Yep I noticed that but fortunately its long enough to not be a problem in the place where my system is to the monitor. No stress at all on the cable.
