They say that the universe is expanding.
If that is the case...what's it expanding into?
A fascinating theory is that we are not the only universe. If you take the theory of the "Big Crunch", which basically means that the universe will eventually stop expanding and then condense down into the ball of mass that it began with, rinse and repeat. This theory opens the question that if in all of that "space" if there is another universe, or even several others that go through the same process. However when we go through the "Big Crunch" we, and everything that we know that exists will die, but will start over (Like that is any more comforting

)
Another theory suggests that the universe will expand continuously and never stop, well this theory sucks too because atoms will eventually expand so much that gravitational attraction will stop and the building blocks of life will cease to exist and will never form, again.
The final theory of the universe is that the universe will eventually stop expanding and that's it. This means that the universe will have to be in equilibrium in order for this to happen, the "perfect" fit of all mass. Well according to Stephen Hawking, the universe has never been, nor will ever be perfect in any way shape or form. If the universe had been perfect to begin with, then gravitational attraction would have never happened at the time of the big bang (The equal distribution of matter). While these are all theories this last one is probably not the answer.
Which leaves the first two, in which all of us and everything that we know will cease to exist. No matter how you spin it, we are trying to understand forces that nothing was never designed to understand, and probably never will. In the quest to discover our own universe we will discover our death, we will foresee our final moments as mankind. For this is the ultimate quest of the universe.
