directly connect my win7 laptop to my winXP pc and transfer files from the XP pc to the 7 laptop.  I have alot of files to transfer.

Also, if it can be done, HOW do I do it?  Please type the answer slow, so I can keep-up with the explanation!

I have not networked Win 7 to XP or visa versa, but have heard it can be problematic.
Just a side note, If you have a external drive you could transfer to external then to your other PC.

patch cable  PC to PC direct way would be best I'd think, next fastest way would be eSAtA HD if both have an eSATA port on them.. prob not though

I would not want to go Flash Drive or USB Ext HD for it will take longer time to do the transfer, especially on large files or video files

Personally I'd take 1 HD from 1 PC and connect it to the other PC as a secondary.
