Dred I'm 100% with you on this one.  I do not like talking on the phone at all and, yes, dialing while driving is dangerous as hell.  I spent $20 on a bluetooth and use voice if I feel the need to call someone.  Everybody who is important has their own ring tone so I can ignore them but know who to call back when its appropriate.  If I feel I absolutely have to answer the call it's tap on my right ear and answer w/o taking my eyes off of the road.  Looking away from the road for 1/8 of a second you can travel a LONG way.

I also agree that playing this game or similar is very good for your SA.  I could tell when I came back that my senses were sharpening when I was on the road.

Good story.

And I dont know about where you are. but our driving tests themselves are a joke.

A short obstacle course where you never go faster then 20 MPH and one of the primary parts and hardest perts of the test is parallel parking.
Anyone thats ever driven a go cart as a kid can pass this test and will have driven faster then you experience on these tests

@Banshee7:  It's a complete non-stop Bad Driver's Ed Film on the roads here.  Tailgating is the state sport and rear-end fenderbenders are the daily traffic snarler all around Little Rock.  Distracted driving is very bad and the truckers have some sort of complete grudge vs 4-wheelers and don't seem to care if they kill someone.  Those "have you been a victim of a tractor-trailer driver" commercials run all day and all night on tv & cable tv.

@DRED:  There is no Driver's Ed here and the driving "test" (if you call it that) only entails taking a spin around the block and not killing anyone.

I totally believe in the system that Illinois has.  MANDATORY 9 week Driver's Ed classes for all sophmores by State Police trained teachers who had to take special courses and pass tests to be certified by the Illinois State Police in both classroom and on the road.  You had road training in every possible scenerio--neighborhood roads, city roads as well as interstate highways.  I had mine in the winter, and YES we all did snow driving.  The actual driving test for the license was done by state troopers (non-uniformed).  If the trooper got in and you started the car and began to move without making sure the troopers seat belt was on and properly clicked it's an automatic FAIL.  The road test was about 1/2 hour long and included everything the high school teachers did and some "surprises"...like backing around an intersection corner, 3-point turns, and proper spacing by speed between vehicles at highway speeds.  If you did not perform to the troopers standards....FAIL.

Oh, and the DUI/DWI ratio here is phenomonally high per 10,000 residents as to other states.  I do not drive after 8 or 9 PM if I at all have to.

I'm 14, and I completely understood what texting while driving is when the guy said:

"If you asked me to close my eyes and drive for five seconds, I'd refuse.  However, if you asked me to answer a text message- no problem"

I realize the true danger in the act, and now I understand why my dad keeps his phone off and in the back seat while he drives.  My goal is to avoid driving all together by living in the city and using mass transit.  That way, I'll save a bundle and use the money to get a nicer apartment.

In my opinion, the roads are a death trap.  I've almost been killed twice, once by a falling tree limb missing our car by only a few feet (dodged thanks to my AH2 enhanced SA letting me warn my dad; HTC you saved my nuts!) and once where my baby-sitter (when I was in 5th grade, who later died of a heroin overdose) hit a car in the adjacent lane.

Public transport doesn't save you much money. Its only ever been a liability whenever I'm forced to use it.
No thank you Turkish, I'm sweet enough.

Thanks Dred. Most , if not all, military posts have made it illegal to talk on cell phones while unless you have a blue tooth. The ironic thing is, the biggest violators are the ones who are supposed to enforce it. If it is not cell phones, now you have people watching DVD's while driving...not cool..
