I guess there was a miscommunication in my mind. I was expecting them to be of tricolor c-hogs that still had transit numbers.

IIRC for a short period of time Naval aircraft operating over Japan had Yellow noses. Purpose? Like invasion stripes, maybe?

You see a plane flying towards your carrier from the direction of Japan. Friend or Foe? Big, Yellow nose.

Just speculation on my part.

There was certain missions that a specific colour was required on all aircraft that were in that battle group. So yes your right I know that white was certainly one of them I am thinking light blue from a profile I have that may be identified wrong as in the case of N-51 CHOG & how the profile called it a D.

although not one japanese aircraft used water/blue colors (iirc) so im pretty sure a big blue plane is american and a big green plane or lime green or etc is japanese. the yellow nose might have signified what you say but idk

New Zealand and the RN had squadrons with the yellow ring and all yellow nose. I don't know if any US squadrons had it. The RN also had a few camoflauged f4u's that also saw service.
