slider in stick controller
« on: March 06, 2011, 04:33:12 PM »
Where can one find the strict definitions as to what exactly each slider does when setting axis sensitivities. I understand bandwidth and deadspots but the sliders 0-90. Hard to tell what each one does to the stick input...

It's the ratio of your actual stick controller movement to the amount of movement seen by Aces High for that portion of controller movement.

Imagine pulling your joystick from dead center to full back. Now take that input and slice it into 10 sections. Assign each section a slider, so you can vary the input from 0 (low) to 100% (at the top)

CH sticks with very good, wise hands can set pitch sliders to max. Do that with a Saitek or a MS Sidewinder and within a day you'll be tearing your hair out. Either default stairstep or a low curve is a good place to start. Here is one example.

I'd recommend setting sliders for roll quite aggressive, as roll normally won't stall you. But having inputs maxed will speed up your roll rate.

Deadband sets where the computer starts picking up input. So if you have a bit of center slop that is throwing you out of autopilot, increase deadband a bit and try again.

Damper is just what it sounds like. Best used to help tune down a bad or spiking pot.
But can be used to reduce overall sensitivity.

While we're on the subject of sticks,

Is there any reason why a CH fighterstick would spike in AH and nowhere else? Stick spiking has almost always been an issue for me here. Sometimes its worse then others but nothing I've tried seems to be able to make it go away. Including a powered hub which showed no improvement at all
Its particularly noticeable if I try to GV where its near impossible to fine tune a shot to the point where I've all but given up on GVing altogether.

Thing is. It doesnt spike in the CM Nor any other games. For example I  downloaded the Airwarrior Demo that I posted about in the general forums And one of the first things I noticed was when I went t set up the stick. no matter what I did to it. There was absolutely no spiking no matter what I did to the stick. Here, if I so much as bump the stick after I've set it in "map controlers" it (the numbers)starts bouncing around like a geiger counter.

Also I no matter what settings I've tried, And I've tried them set all over the place I cant seem to set it so a slight movement on the stick equals a slight movement of my turret. Again most noticable in GVs,barely to near un noticeable in aircraft when trying to fine tune a shot. It always seems to move the turret at least 2-3 times as far as I wanted it to go no matter how little pressure I've applied to the stick.

Try setting different scaling for mode 2.

regarding CH Products Controllers and Spiking:

a good several years ago, I had a CH FighterStick that was spiking and was driving me nuts...... upon opening the bottom of the Stick ( removing the base )...... I noticed that several wire connectors ( female spade connectors ) were loose/wiggly on the spade terminals.....if I went to disconnect any one of these connectors, it would effortlessly slide right off......

so to fix it, I got some wire crimpers and clamped down on the connectors to make them a good solid snug fit/connection... the end result, was no more spiking issues

I do not know why you experience spiking, Dred, it very well maybe a loose connection that when you go to move the stick, the wire is slightly moved pulling or pushing on a loose connector......perhaps...

I just know this is what solved my problem with a spiking CH Fighterstick I once had that was a gameport version of the stick.....

edit: sometimes , even while setting up/calibrating I would not see the "RAW" numbers be spiking/jumping erratically, but then later when checking after playing AH or whatever game I would see the numbers jumping back and forth on 1 or more axis....this was what prompted me to check inside....

hope this is of some help

"When one considers just what they should say to a new pilot who is logging in Aces High, the mind becomes confused in the complex maze of info it is necessary for the new player to know. All of it is important; most of it vital; and all of it just too much for one brain to absorb in 1-2 lessons" TC

Wow...great info gents.thanks.....so slider "0" deals with the first 10% of the stick movement and the "90" slider would deal with the last 10% of the stick travel....?
