I read it in December.  It is too bad that Brian died I always liked him.  :cry  I was actually thinking about this book last week and even though it was fun to read while I was reading it.  Well, the storyline kinda sucks I mean really blowing up a concrete nuclear waste facility that is empty and not fully finished well that kind of lame.

Did Clancy actually write this one??

Tom Clancy is a very talented writer, I have read and enjoyed the entire Jack Ryan and John Clark series, and a couple of his non-fiction books too.

BUT...  I have lost a whole lot of respect for him recently.  I read a lot, and pick up paperbacks from thrift stores for 50 cents.  Was perusing the bookshelf one day and saw 2 books with Tom Clancy-Splinter Cell on the spine.  So I thought, hmmm a new Clancy series, outta be good, spent a buck and got them.

WORST DOLLAR I EVER SPENT!!!   Later realized that it said on the cover in tiny letters "created by" above the large Tom Clancy.  They where actually written by some guy I'd never heard of and SUCKED!!!  I got through about a third of one and gave up because it was so bad it was almost painful to read.

I've noticed now that Clancy has done this a lot recently, that is stuck his name on books he didn't write.  I even tried another "created by Clancy-written by _________" book in a series called Power Plays, it sucked too, though not as bad as Splinter Cell.

So anyway, not a big Clancy fan anymore, since it appears he's retired from writing and is willing to put his name on almost any crappy book he can to make a few more bucks.

Saggs I didn't look into it too closely but I've read some of the spin offs and was as unimpressed as you were.  This one, however, had a lot more of the old Clancy feel.  It wasn't great by any means but it was a good read.  I'm not going to toss out any spoilers but I enjoyed it and will read it again.

I liked it.  It bounced around a bit much, but overall it was a good read.  I've read most of Clancy's stuff, but I still prefer Vince Flynn's books.  Flynn keeps ya reading when ya know you should be going to bed.

I read Dead or Alive on Epub the first week or so it was out.  I thought it was just OK, certainly no Red Storm Rising that's for sure.

Vince Flynn....I admire his books and his personal attitude about life/politics etc, but some of his tactics and use of weapons make me and others I know cringe.  Example, the Suppressed M4 "Massad Ayoob" edition rifle that he used in one book made us laugh out loud, as Ayoob is considered a bit of a joke in defensive shooting/PSD circles, not to mention that anyone can put together a decent M4 system, you certainly rarely see a rifle like system with a celebrity name stamped on it.  Also, his main character Rapp in the same book carried both a 9mm Glock 17 and a .45 Glock 21.  At the same time.  No operator would EVER do such a thing as it would be incredibly easy to insert the wrong magazine into either pistol during an emergency reload...or even a tactical reload.  Maybe I'm too picky...I do enjoy his books as I said.

As for Tom Clancy, like many I grew up reading his stuff, and since 2000 it has been ALL downhill if you ask me.

What I'd really like to see is him restart his technical series of books like "Fighter Wing", which started that series I believe.  They were great in their day.
