the stink of it was that the apu was supplied with gas from a 5 gallon container suspended above to apu with bungee cords. in the excitement of taxing no one bothered to turn off the apu or secure the jurry rigged apu fuel tank. and the plane burned out along the fuselage but the wings were somewhat intact.
Another trail of information says the 4 engines were salvaged and are currently being used on the Confederate Air Forces "Fifi" B29. The worlds only flying superfortress.
No on the engines. Folks have discussed going after them, but they are still there as I understand it.
FiFi has totally rebuilt and modified engines, installed fairly recently to get her back in the air.
FiFi is the only flying 29 right now, but there are a number of other survivors. Doc is probably the best bet on a 29 to get back in the air. Kermit Weeks has one as well that if he gets around to it, could be restored to fly.
