F.I.R.S.T. the best kept secret
« on: March 12, 2011, 11:42:56 PM »
I'm in F.I.R.S.T. robotics competition or FRC, this is my first year. F.I.R.S.T. stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" To find out more you could visit the website http://www.usfirst.org/Default.aspx or read this book based on a team.

I had no idea how my first FRC was going to be but when I showed up I was blown away at the immediate positive hospitality, spirit, and pride of all teams. For example our robot had issues and we needed these big sim motors and a bunch of parts we didn't have. After 15 minutes of searching and talking to other teams, we had 2 more Sim motors, bolts that were cut to size, and a washer for the gear needed for the gear box. Although you may or may not be versing these other teams, when you were in the pit area we were all united. Kind of funny because this one guys team that we played with, was the guy/team that that book was about. I was like holy !@#$ when i found out like 3 hours later, I played with and against a team that had a book written on them and won?! Please invest more time learning what it is; it is very hard to explain! as even said so during opening ceremony  :lol
If you have any questions please ask!

My PLC's instructor was talking about this. It seems a nearby high school is competing this year.

Very cool to get the youngsters involved and getting some hands-on experience.

Instructor guy also talked about a few other international competitions. (Darned if I can remember the names though.)

Good luck Guns, I'm glad you enjoy this.

We just had a regional at the sports arena near hotel circle in SD, theres another in LA but due to lack of funds we are not able to go. After regional are nationals, which takes place in Atlanta, then international with Canada, and UK, and i think a few others, Mexico is very new to it and so we had there rookie teams of 2 come to SD for regionals.

NASA, JCP, ABBOT, RIVERSPRINGS CHARTER, ANDYMARK, and more. we had 16,000 $$$ given by sponsors. We only used a fraction of it!

When In highscool I used to participate in VEX (Basically same thing but a set choice of parts and certain parts had quantity limits on it) My school basically shot down FIRST right away cause safety and monetary issues. However, me and my buddies went to the world championships for VEX two years in a row. Was amazing.

Our school uses VEX for middleschoolers, i tinkered with it and liked first Way better, everything is from scratch unless provided to you. I find it more prestigious.

Yah, we would of liked to do F.I.R.S.T. but California is poor as all hell.

Been my son's coach for two  year with F.I.R.S.T lego He can move up next year to the high school robotics.

Was so proud of him and his teammate this year. They argued some rules discrepancies with the judges and got head judge to rule in their favor.

Also He made high score in robot performance in regional and state. It was great to see him step up to the plate and be cool under pressure.
