Most bases that have been around for a while have internet services. They are far from cheap. I am paying $80 a month for internet that is mildly faster than dial up.
Of course, you can always go to the MWR and use the internet there for free but usually there is a time limit and the place is always packed.
I know a few guys that all chipped in and bought their own small satellite and have their own internet. Super expensive though.

Being part of a Stryker BDE, you will probably be here in RC South (Kandahar Province). Most of the bases are built up and have reasonable luxury's.

The satellite idea is a good one but not worth it. Bunch of guys tried setting them up. A lot had issues with the companies and such. Heads up, be careful with using the internet you have. Probably the same me and my buddies had. Quite a few had their Identities stolen.

Yup RC East. But got to see all part of that lovely country and some others doing transfers.

Funny story. Sorta random. Running the perimeter of the base at one spot in the line closest to the village there was a kid that was always there yelling at the runners from the outside of the fence. Next to him stood the poorest looking cow Ive seen in my life. It was extremely emaciated. I felt bad for the cow and was sure it would die soon. Bit month after month it was still there and so was the kid. One day I decided to stop and try and figure out what the kid was yelling about. Come to find out he was trying to sell his pet cow to anyone. The offer was $5. I played along and asked/mimed to the kid how he would get the cow through the fence, barbed wire, and razor wire to me. He then pointed to the area around him. Bagram was, I dont know if it still is, in the top 5 most mined areas in the world thanks to the Russians. Anyways the kid points to the field and mimes that he would walk the cow over a land mine, then boom, give me pieces of cow through the fence... I then continued on with my run.

Yes, I wouldn't trust using a credit card on the ISPs located in Afghanistan. I've also heard about people getting money stolen from them while they were at the PX on KAF (Kandahar Air Field). There were charges they had not made being sent to the Phillipines I believe. However, I bought things many times there and never had an issue. Just be sure to check your LES and bank statement often.

Strange, I have a funny story about a cow and a child as well. It involves a 240B. There was this little girl who couldn't have been much older than 10 that we would see almost daily herding her cows to the river. She never seemed to mind us and would always wave. One day while she was letting the cows drink, one went too far into the river and must have got stuck. She tried everything to get the cow out of the water. Yelling at it, hitting it with a stick, throwing rocks, cow would not budge. The cow didn't seem to care even though it was up to its neck in water. Seeing this, we motioned for her to get away from the cow and the had the gunner on our lead vehicle fire a 5 round burst next to the cow. It was out of the water faster than I got my hearing back.
