the crayon co-worker
« on: March 24, 2011, 07:37:45 PM »
you ever been forced to work with someone who makes you want to break out the crayons everytime you talk to them because they're so dumb?

i rarely if ever let someone at work get to me but, there is an 1d10t in my department that i have to deal with so dumbfounded by the simplest functions, i have to draw pictures for him to even hope to understand. i'm a unix systems administrator (not brightest by any means) and the 1d10t is a peoplesoft reports writer.

he has never had to know anything about unix commands or anything...we actually dummied things down to make it easier on him...the last incident was a simple data path change to some folders i gave him access to, it was for organizational purposes so i could track errors and such...took over an hour, a lot of drawing and some live demonstration to get the guy to comprehend this.

the old path was like this: /peoplesoft folder/sub directory/working directory and he was supposed to drop files in the working directory...and one of my scripts was suppose to upload those files to an offsite vendor...mind you this is in a testing/development environment.

me: hey, 1d10t i've made a slight change for this test run so i can keep track of the files you're uploading and keep better track of errors

1d10t: ok, what's the change?

me: well, instead of jumbling all those files into a single directory where we have continued to have issues with naming and other things i've created 3 sub directorys for you to drop the files into depending on where the come from. i already have the scripts in place and all you need to do is drop the files in the correct places.

1d10t: uh ok, so how do i do that?

me: what do you mean?

1d10t: how do i get the files in those folders?

me: same way you have been getting them into the single folder

1d10t: but these are different folders so how do i get to them?

me: oh well just go to the folder you use to go to, and you will see the 3 new folders. i named them so they would be fairly obvious.

1d10t: ok so i go to the folder i used to go to and then...how do i get to the new folders?

me:  :headscratch:  :bhead  well, 1d10t if you go to the directory you used to go to, then open one of the new folders, you can just drop the correct files in to whatever folder you are looking in.

1d10t:  :headscratch:  :uhoh  oookkk...but i'm confused why did you create new folders?

me:    :furious  :bhead well, 1d10t it's because of those problems we had with the last project where you dumped files into a single folder and we ended up having all kinds of problems with the vendor asking us what we were uploading and having to look at date and time stamps...then having to go back and rewrite scripts...it was a mess. even the end users got confused. i thought this would make for better organization and easier to track all the different files.

1d10t:  :uhoh   :huh i'm still confused, how is this going to work in production?

me:  :furious  :furious  :furious  :bhead in production we will have one folder just like every other production job we have that is exactly like this one. you are only going to be putting the files from one instance of your program into it. the file names are set and we don't have to deal with multiple versions.

1d10t:  :headscratch:  :uhoh  :huh well, ok so am i supposed to give these files different names and what am i supposed to put in my scripts for testing?

... :furious ... ... 90 minutes later, a lot of drawing data paths and script writing, mr.1d10t is has a clue...i go have a smoke and eat a hand full of tylenol.

today, i get a helpdesk ticket from mr.1d10t requesting "PERMANENT" access to the file shares he uses on some of my development servers.  :headscratch: so i go digging around, wondering what he's talking about since he has had "permanent" access for a long time and i haven't changed anything that would affect him in over 2 months. check access permissions on my servers, check connectivity to them using a spoofed account...blah blah blah...finally i go ask someone that he talk to about this issue earlier in the day...

the only change that has occurred that would affect mr.1d10t...he got a new workstation 3 weeks ago and the person who installed it for him did not replicate his shortcuts and mapped drives.
:furious  :bhead    :furious  :bhead

Not everybody is a computer person in this day and age.
Doesn't make them an idiot because they don't understand.

Would you call your son an idiot because he doesn't yet
know how to act in public? I would hope not.

Anyone who types like this "1d10it" is the type that makes me want to shake my head and hand out the crayons.  Seriously, that's how I expect a 14 year old to type.

I once saw a co-worker fill out an application for a promotion in crayon.  Then he drew a picture on the back of it.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

so a guy who works in the i.t. department and writes then tests scripts all day on a windows computer in a multi-os enterprise server environment isn't a computer person? you should go inform this guy of that, he thinks he is.

ya'll are funny...

1d10t is apparently the USAF's most popular AFSC.  Ironically, due to an administrative error (1d10t has clerical functions) the 1d10t career field has been exempt from all reduction in force actions for the last 30 years, so it's still authorized reagan-era manning.  That's why all the really talented military folks seem to get kicked out or passed over for promotion, while the biggest clowns on base always seem to be throwing promotion parties.

Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't read through your whole post. It's worse than reviewing a fourth
grader's spelling test.

Oh by the way, you failed it.

Actually yes Gyrene... I just got through explaining why one of my coworkers computers was running extremely slow thanks to Nortons background processes to the owner.  It was kind of fun watching his eyes glaze over and seeing the 'I really wish he would shut up' thought going on behind them.

That's what you get for A) Not listening to me when I said we need to dump Norton in favor of ESET and B) not upgrading the computers around here excepting your sons for the last seven years.

PEOPLEsoft!!!  growwwwllllll...  hissssss...

I admin-ed some AIX servers for one of those P-soft report manglers - an IT staffer! - who could never understand the difference between RAM and disk.

It's dangerous for someone like that to get any ideas in their head.  There's so much space in there for them to bounce around and do damage.*

Bahahahah, how typical.  A Unix SA calling someone not familiar with Unix an idiot.  I think they teach that in a secret Unix class.

Our Unix SAs thought the COO of the <insert exchange name> was an idiot because he could not understand some security stuff.   :rofl :rofl :rofl  Their world is very small.  You are either in it or you are an idiot  :lol

Easy killer.  Too many big words there.  If he is writing test scripts on windows it does not mean he knows anything about unix.  You both sound entry level anyway  ;)
