Water Cooling Add ons
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:11:08 AM »
Ok this question is for the guys who have water cooled their rigs. I am looking for a sturdier hose to use a water cooling system, Clear Flex 3/8" ID x 1/2" OD Tubing, is the tubing I am using right now. I was just wondering if there was a way to use clear PVC piping to do the water cooling? I want to get away from the "sag" effect of the hoses.

If you have any hints I would gladly appreciate the help.

Uhhmm, something missing from that discussion on the "sludge/thickening" issue is the fact that most plastic tubing will leech resins into the coolant and that is where most of the "sludge" comes from.

You need to use tubing that is rated "food safe".  It will leech tolerable amounts of resins into the coolant.  If you can get a tubing that will carry alcohol and is food safe, even better.  Alcohol is highly corrosive and will actually dissolve a number of polymers so any tubing rated to carry alcohol will do a very good job with keeping the water cleaner.

Just FYI.

I guess that's natural since most 'water wetters' and 'anti algae' formulas are actually glycole, a highly toxic form of alcohol.

I'd use the poly tubing that water treatment companies use for chemical injection via diaphragm type pumps.  They're extremely resistant to acids/bases/UV.  I've seen glycol injection systems last years without a retube, alcohol wouldn't be a problem at all either.  Also, this type of tubing is semi-rigid and would probably take care of the "slump" problem.  If anyone is interested I can get some details on how to get the good stuff.

EDIT:  It's also good at handling liquid at high pressure.  I'm not sure how much pressure a typical liquid cooling rig produces, but 150 psi is no prob for 1/2 in or 3/8 in.

This is what I use.

I misread you post now can't delete
I wouldn't go with solid tubing, I don't think I have ever seen it done.
