Would be cool if true, but some things don't add up unfortunatley and make this story seem unlikely.  The fact the boy's mother was certain and confident in what a pre-flight check procedure was and that her son was demonstrating it but then was clueless and unaware of what an external drop tank is on an aircraft was the most glaring to me.

Which wasn't the plane that Lt. Huston flew in the war, he flew the FM2 Wildcat.

That was another thing that lit a lightbulb in my head, wasn't the corsair relatively a rare bird in comparison to the other aircraft that flew and saw combat in the pacific for the US?  It wasn't nearly as popular or well-known of an aircraft as it was until after the war and it gained some hollywood fame, then it became like the most well-known of the WWII US Pacific fighter aircraft.
