Then again, life has gotten better.

1.) Women's rights have made huge strides, along with minority groups being able to get a decent job
2.) Medicine has made huge strides, steriliztion has become mandatory for all things
3.) No more lead in the paint
4.) No more lead in the gasoline
5.) No more lead in the pipes
6.) Airbags and full seatbelts mandatory on all non-racing cars
7.) Electric lawnmowers (thank goodness for those, the gasoline ones make my ears ring)
8.) The personal computer
9.) The internet
10-10,000.) New things one can do with the internet (research, find old friends)
10,010.) Non-stop flights from California to Bejing
10,011.) Genetically modified crops to boost food supply
10,012.) Fall of Communism
10,013.) AH2

You guys are confusing how fun being a kid was with the actual quality of life back then.  Now that you're an adult and life sucks, you blame it on the time period.

When I was a kid it was pretty much the way the OP said.  Didn't even get AC in the house 'till we sold it.  Video games....... they were around, but we didn't have them.  Was pretty much go outside and play all day. We had one TV, never watched it. Caller ID?  Didn't know what it was. If I wanted to go someplace it was either walk or take the bicycle.

I'm 19 and I couldn't stop laughing, or agreeing for that matter  :uhoh
sadly so, same here. He's very right..although I'm not nearly as dependant on Computers or other things as some of my friends. I look around in class and half of them have their iPods or phones out.

actually I think most of the things he mentioned are just more chains around the necks of people, and one day will be used to completely  subjugate every one except a very few.

Great Post!

Forgot...at my age we didn't get a television until 1955!  3 Channels is all ya got and it was crappy reception compared to today.
We listened to the radio.  No Color TV until 1967, and all shows did not broadcast in Color!
If ya got a beating in School, ya got another one when you came home.  Naturally the Principal called your Parents and let them
know what you did. My Grandparents had a party telephone line which meant more then one household used the same phoneline.
If you needed the phone and your neighbors were chatting (sometimes up to 4) you had to ask politely for them to hang up.
I remember my grandmother talking with 3 neighbor ladies swapping recipes.

Comic Books!   Yayyyyyyyy  Back in our day we could actually read!!!

there's more.....but not enuff room or time LOL  :old:

3) Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us.  As a matter
of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our butts!

Yes, it's just that homework keeps getting in the way.

actually I think most of the things he mentioned are just more chains around the necks of people, and one day will be used to completely  subjugate every one except a very few.

How will women's rights, clean medical equipment, safer cars, the fall of communism and the removal of toxic lead from paint and drinking water pipes subjugate us?

+1. while all he said is great and true...it is not like it was.

It's not like it was, true.  However, do realize that you grew up in a time where blacks, women, and those from the Eastern bloc (Poland for instance, where my mom was from) were under a glass ceiling.  There was also the possibility of an earth-shattering nuclear war.  I thank the previous generation for saving the world from the abyss of that possible holocaust.
