Dad was 1st Lt in marines, combat platoon leader, at Choisin Res..all guys in his unit he"either knew, dated their sisters, or ran around Maywood with.." when he can home..he was not very welcome, his unit had high attrition rate..and had to live w/distant relatives in Kent.. But there was one, John Groth, a 2nd Uncle who'd served as war correspondant in WW2 and in French indo-China and early Korean war.
This outstanding man commiserated with and counseled my bereaved father..long before the Gov was able to help my own son after his tours in Iraq.
Much as Hooter wears his name as a memorial to a vietnam soldier, I've worn mine for this gent. He was always softspoken when I talked with him, an artist I remeber at 8yo complaining I could never draw horses as well as he, he but encouraged me to continue. He wrote 2 books, Studio Europe(about being war correspondent in ww2) and Studio Asia(about french indo-china/early korea).
So, if I fail to live up to such standards, forgive me. I can but try. S Hooter.
