vid card problems..could use some help
« on: April 23, 2011, 09:20:47 AM »
ok, i think im figuring out whats wrong with my puter. Im having problems with the video card.  I can tell because i am on the guest account on my puter and it hasn't froze up yet.  I haven't run any graphics on this account so it should be running with basic settings.  when i log onto my user account on my puter, it usually sets up the desktop when starting up, then it freezes.  I want to try and bring back the default settings on my user account, but i can't get that far to do it.  i'll try and open the control center then it freezes.  it  wasnt' bad last night, well, it was but it's worse this morning.  i'm not sure, it's slowly getting worse. i will try and see if i can change settings from guest account, dont' think i will as i dont' have admin priviledges from here...hmmm..and there's no administrator account i can try to log in with, none that i know of anyway. wish me luck, i'm gonna need it, and any possible advice you guys can give.  i'll try and reset drivers for the vid card, see what happens, from here, running it under my admin priviledges. we'll see.
I'm running an ATI 6870 with AMD 3.4Ghz Quad.  i have the vid card set up to higher graphics settings so i can get better visuals in the game. need to reset my settings to default to get game running again..can't do from my account, not sure how to do from guest account, could use advice.

thanks,

FuFiter

if you get log in under safe mode you might be able to uninstall the video card drivers/management program...that should get you back to square 1 where you can reinstall the drivers and set your card up properly. but the video card drivers may not be your problem. without more specific information, i've seen that issue before just recently on laptop running win7 home 64bit, you wouldn't happen to be connecting to an hp inkjet printer and/or running wireless on that system would you?

wouldn't that kind of hardware issue make the issues appear regardless of what login profile was used?

User profiles shouldn't affect installed drivers either. Settings, programs yes but not drivers.

Which leads me to the next question: Have you overclocked anything on your system? Are you using ATI control panel and the overclocking function there? That would fit your profile of getting unstable only when logging on to your own profile (and consequently loading the oc profile).

I've had the vid card up at higher settings for better graphics, but not overclocked. I tried autotuning the vid card and it froze, had to restart the computer.  i tried to bring settings back to default but then i coulnd't get into device mgr.  i want to now just unistall the driver and start over.  i'm hoping that will work. i'll try doing that in safe mode if it will let me. have not oc'd the cpu as of yet, just autotuned it and it went up to 3.48ghz without oc'ing.  want to wait a while and get all bugs worked out before i try to over clock.

did you use an autotune program to reduce number of processes?  is it from the mobo manufacturer?

sounds like the catalyst control center is messed up...and as ripley said that would fit the profile problem...wondering now if it was the latest set that was recently released or if it was the setup from the driver disc that came with the video card.

unfortunately i'm not sure you can uninstall that stuff under safemode...i uninstalled the ccc off my system so i can't tell you whether there is an uninstall under the programs menu or not, but if there is that might be the way to go instead of trying the control panel.
