Video settings for new computer
« on: May 03, 2011, 09:04:43 PM »
I made the plunge and bought a new computer.
Intel Core i7 CPU @3.2 GHz
12 GB Ram
Windows 7 64 bit OS

ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series Video Card
1.0 GB Video Ram
Resolution 1920 x 1080

24" LCD HD Monitor

I've downloaded and installed the High Res pack.  Wow. On this 24" screen things look absoulutely amazing.
Anyway, in moving through the different menus I found a scale for anti-aliasing.  (what ever that is)
Any suggestions on where I should set this particular control?
thanks

With your system I'd set it for highest quality images.    Need an emoticon for tongue hanging out

I have a Core2Duo with only 4 megs of ram and an ATI 5830 (the lowest of the 58XX series IIRC) and I can run almost full settings at 1920X1200...

2048 Textures
MAX AA
Sliders set to most detailed and furthest distance
All advanced options on EXCEPT other planes' shadows.
Smooth Shadows enabled, but only 2048 textures.

If you have a 5850 you can probably crank up to 4096 shadow textures, and with a 5870 you can probably enable other planes' shadows as well.

Personally I usually have shadows turned off completely (except building shadows) because it gets a little distracting at times.

Have you read my Aces High guide to graphics settings posted HERE? (right click/save as)

I do have the settings at the highest value. It's just the anti-aliasing slider that I don't know what to do with.

Excellent article Tiger.  I guess with the resolution I am using I can just ignore anti-aliasing?
