"part of windows" as you say -- but still a process showing up in the list nonetheless! One must not shut these processes down, regardless of where they came from originally.

P.S. My Microsoft Optical mouse and the several before it requires MS' optical mouse drivers. I learned that the hard way. Without said drivers you get jitters, problems, snap-motions, and other long-term problems that go away as soon as you install the driver. Learned that through practical experience. They are not plug-and-play, despite pretending to be.

If MS optical mouse can't run without extra drivers it's better to get another brand then!

My laptop run at 17 processes, optical mouse and all.

Sorry for the hijack, but it's actually a good product. I like it, it has good feel, good responsiveness, it doesn't cost a billion dollars (some of those wannabe gamer mouses! Ugh! $100 for a mouse?? I don't THINK so!), and it lasts a long time. If all it takes is a small driver install (and it comes with the driver on a disc) that's worth it.

Matter of preference I guess. I just dumped a MS laserpoint gaming mouse to trash, replaced it with a 20 euro steelseries which is much better. The MS mouse just wouldn't feel right, driver or without driver. Best gaming mouse I've had was ocz razer but it broke after 4 months of use.

Ah, I never went laser. I stayed optical (there's a difference in design)

Not to hijack either but I have a MS trackball optical that I bought 10 years ago for about 80$ still works great and yes I loaded the drivers. If you can find them on ebay they are well over 100$ know. If and when this breaks I don't know what I'll do.

Yes everyone is right about black vipers.
There he has some reg files you  can download and the file will do the work for you. Just remember to save the reg before you over write it.
