Not sure how bad XP, and earlier were, but with Vista the problems were taken to a new high. Windows 7 addressed the most serious problems but left a lot of lingering issue behind.
If you insist on running a computer and using power management in Windows, you really need to disable both read and write caching to help reduce problems associated with those functions.
It really is not a good idea to run, a Windows based computer, with any type of power management enabled.
