wrongway
Yes, I've made PT attacks this way. A couple of pictures in that thread are pretty unrealistic though - when is the last time you saw a PT that close to an enemy Cruiser that wasn't being blasted to bits by auto-ack or 5" fire? The destroyers auto-ack would be blasting this PT boat to flinders long before it got inside the ring to launch a torpedo.
It is is one thing to figure a solution that works in the training arena, but really another to make it work in the MA. The 'slow torpedo' used by our late-model PT boats is a variation of the Mk.13 aerial torpedo and was launched by the roll-off racks. There was another type that used an impulse launcher (similar to a destroyer launcher in that the torpedo is spewed out) and these would fire the longer Mk.8 and Mk.14 torpedoes. The Mk.8 mod 8 was good for 15,000 yards at 29 knots with a 466 lb warhead, but having a torpedo SLOWER than the CV group doesn't do us much good. The Mk.14 has a 4,500M @ 46 knots setting with a 668 Lb warhead that might be a good fit, and I know via the manual that the launcher was supposed to be rated to handle it.
