If it's that much trouble, why do we issue decorative headwear to people who are rolling in the mud, blood and dust all day long?  It seems like a waste of cloth and time that could be better spent than steaming and shaving berets.  Seriously, these beret-related verbs are becoming quite creepy.

Berets are just a reason to join the Marines instead.

What is the point of the baret? It does not block the sun that good and it catches a lot of dust being so fluffy

My thoughts exactly, why the f* would you wear a baret, why not something useful like a helmet?

Brit troops in the Falklands wore beret's (at least marines/para's and scots guards did) in order to help identifying targets at night. It was considered the silhouette of helmets would lead to some blue on blues as all the Argie's wore them. Most helmets are nigh on useless at stopping anything harder hitting than pistol rounds/shrapnel anyway. (I'd still prefer to have one on my napper nevertheless)

True, but I don't suppose that Delta Force, the Airborne, the SEALs and Rangers wore those things anywhere else than parade.  Perhaps they did, maybe I'm wrong.

So the four point helmets didn't fix the problem of medics exposing their heads to perform surgery?  Dang, you just can't believe what you see on TV.

maybe I'm just lazy, but unless I'm taking contact I take off anything on my head. And the helmets are a pain, get tangled, add weight, and u better pray u get the right size which at my reserve unit is not likely.

Most of all though its about comfort....the more comfortable u are, the more precise u are...but treating people stateside is different. In country u bet my ach stays sinched tight

I will still hold forth the proposition that a black beret looks silly without one of these on your left shoulder...

Same for the red beret and one of these...

Von, I agree with you 100%. When I was at Ft Campbell, there were rumors of our BDE CDR wanting atleast 90% of the Brigade, Air Assault qualified to get us the Steel Beret. Like I said , it was a rumor.Berets distinguished  the creme de la creme from us mainstreamers.   :salute

Tomcat when were you at Ft. Campbell?  I was there 75-79.  Everyone wore a blue beret at that time.  I think I went thru Air Assault training in 76, then Recondo school 78ish.

Beret? That's a french word isn't it?  :devil

At least the French know how to dress.  Until Libya I thought they didnt have any balls.
The only HO I have every attempted was with a French potato named Miss Francine.  Otherwise I stay away from the HO it makes me very nervous having 20 and 30mm shells whipping by my canopy.
