BSOD, now no POST
« on: August 07, 2011, 12:59:42 PM »
Wasn't doing anything other than normal forum trolling, Wham, BSOD.  Tried to reboot, nothing.  I found my Knoppix disk, put it in, but unable to get into BIOS even to change it to boot from CD.

UGH!

ASUS P5NE-SLI MB doesn't have a CMOS clear switch that I can find.  Any ideas?   :headscratch:

For clearing CMOS, unplug from mains, then remove and replace the CMOS battery. You can even shortcut the battery cradle poles, but usually it isn't necessary. Oh, and there is a clear switch in right lower corner, called CLRTC. Read the manual page 1-26.

Other: Take off and reseat all memory modules and GPU. Check that all fans rotate at startup. Replug all wires.

If you still aren't up and running, leave only one memory module in place, unplug all drives and reboot. Even without a boot volume you should be able to get a POST message and go into CMOS settings. If no success, try with another memory module, preferably in another slot.

After testing all memory modules in vain, remove all of them, as well as the GPU, leaving only the CPU in place. Reboot. You should hear beeps (check you have a speaker connected like on page 1-36, your mobe doesn't seem to  have a beeper installed) indicating missing memory and GPU.

If possible, try to boot with another PSU. Even an older one will do for POST testing.

If possible, test your memory modules and GPU in another computer at least for booting. If they work, then the problem lies either in your CPU or motherboard. If you can get a suitable CPU, try it. If that fails, it's the mobo.

Remember to ground yourself and switch the mains off when playing with components. Good luck!

Continuing the odd issue...

Pulled battery, restarted, got the usual checksum error, pressed F1 to continue and windows starts normally.  OK, so I shut it down, reinstall battery, restart, goes through POST, but no Windows.  It just hangs on black screen.

Restart again, able to get into BIOS, loaded defaults, fixed date and time, save, exit, goes through POST and still hangs on black screen.

Possibly hard drive????

Lately I have met computers working perfectly one day, the next time they won't boot to windows. Most of them have had a boot sector virus. I've used F-Secure Rescue CD to get rid of the virus, after that a chkdsk /r is often needed. I'm not a virus coader, so I can't tell for sure, but it seems some nasties creep into a computer from some netsite and just sit still until the machine is shut down. Then, in the second the antivirus program shuts down, it activates and tries to add some code into an essential driver. If the procedure fails, the driver gets corrupted causing BSOD.

For finding hard disk errors I use Ultimate Boot CD. Hitachi/IBM and Seagate tests work for all brands.
