So at the end of the day, what's the point of this?  I can't imagine any practical use for this sort of device.  I suppose it'll have some useful spinoff - if anyone knows what it is - please let me know.

How about as a last line of defense to intercept an inbound missile.   :salute

Or, to smash MOABs on Balloon Tower Defense 4   ;)

It was developed after the big ban on land mines, they also made a 3 barrel police version that offered lethal / non lethal ammo.  They also claim to be developing 40mm foam grenades to be fired from fire trucks to fight skyscraper fires.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

I dropped a box of ammo on my foot... Basic math gives that dropping incident a cyclic rate of nearly 90,000,000 rounds per minute.  Doesn't make it militarily significant except that I had to go to the doc afterwards and it took me off of the schedule for a couple of days until I could put my boot on again.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

The Discovery Channel explains it a little better.

Hey eagl he asked how it was possible to have a RoF that high, I answered it.  Did I say anything about military significance?

No, and I don't think anyone is claiming to have invented something better than mines for purposes that mines were traditionally used for.

The military significance of it is so the airforce doesnt have to use bombs all the time. They figure mounting a couple million of theese barels on the underside of a bomber and perferateing anything they want whatch the Future weapons episode on it.
<Insert witty remark here>
