Video Card Upgrade - Recommendations request
« on: June 06, 2011, 12:50:37 PM »
I'm looking for full eye candy @ 1920x1080 @ 60FPS (Tv/Monitor Max).

Current System:
Q6600 @ 2.4ghz (no OC)
8Gb Ram
ASUS Striker Extreme 680I Mb
2x Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX OC2 in SLI
1xDVD W/R
1XCD W/R
7xHDs (2xRaid1 OS + 2xRaid1 Data + 2x software Raid0 Games + 1x Misc)
750Watt 30+Amp PSU

No funds for a new MB/CPU/Mem/PSU.  Looking for something to tide me over till next gen CPU/MBs are released.

Thinking Nvidia 2xGTX 560 Ti in SLI or 1xGTX 570

Thoughts ???

Thanks in advance.

Frankly, if you can't pull full eye candy on that setup already, something may be wrong.

Went back to 197 drivers, Waffle video set-up recommendations, 512Mb textures, 1680x1050 res, etc.  I have got the background processes down to 34~37 ish.  The CPU never exceeds 30%~50%, even if CPU affinity is bound to only 2 cores.  I can't seem to find the bottleneck.

@ 1920x1080 in blue skies I can hold 55~60 FPS, but low furballs over trees, burning bases, etc, the FPS drop to 25~40 FPS.  Of course @ 1680x1050 the issue is not as bad, but I'd like to be able to play at 60 FPS at full res.

The SLI 8800s just don't seem to be able to push the pixels fast enough anymore.  Performance tuning suggestions would also be appreciated.

Two or Four RAM sticks?    If all slots are full, it might be slower.  Dunno, just thinking on that note is all.

The 2.4Ghz CPU speed is on the low side.  In order for the video cards to be able to do the work, the work has to be delivered to them.  Just a thought.

The Q6600 is already an aging CPU and at 2.4Ghz it can't compete with modern CPUs even at same frequency. I think Skuzzy was referring to the fact that whatever you run through the display adapter is processed through cpu by way or another and this becomes a bottleneck, especially on AH which is CPU heavy.

The problem with Q series cpus is also that even though it has 4 cores the cores have to compete about a limited cpu and memory bus, gimping the system even more.

Anyone out there that is running the Q6600 OC'd on the Asus Striker Extreme?   I'd be willing to give OCing my system a shot. I've played with OCing it in the past, but have not really put any hardcore effort into it, yet.

I'd assume that OCing to something in the 3.0Ghz area would be possible and will show some improvement in FPS.  I have plenty of CPU cooling available, running aftermarket Zaleman V1.

OR do I go and spend my video card $$$ on a new CPU Q9650 or QX9650 of which both are ~3.0Ghz?

Video cards can only work on the data they get.  The CPU has to generate the data for the video card.  In a balanced system, neither is the bottleneck.  However, in a dual-8800 video card arrnagement, the 2.4Ghz CPU is probably the bottleneck in Aces High.

It does not matter how many cores you have, once you get passed 2, for the game.  It is the clock rate per instruction that matters the most for the best performance.

Multiple cores do not gain alot of performance for any single application instance.  Multiple cores are best suited for running multiple applications at a time.  Aces High will, natively, use 2 cores, and that is it.  For the 100 cores would run the same as 2 cores, if the clock rates are the same.

In this instance, a 3Ghz E8400 would outperform the Q6600 by a pretty good margin.

Now, if you are running some type of video editing software, such as Sony Vegas Pro, or Adobe Premier Pro, then the Q6600 is a bette choice than a dual-core CPU would be, even at the slower clock rate.

Overall though, Your system does not appear to be running all that well.  Is the CPU overheating?  If you have Intel Speedstep enabled, and it overheats, it will slow the CPU down.  How about your RAM?  What speed is it?

I still have one of these MBs floating around as well as another ASUS 680i system. Even with a faster CPU the MB is bandwidth limited. So the issue is not the CPU RAM or GPUs. That said you would still have some lack of maximum performance even on a 780i with that CPU and GPU combination. Unfortunately until you can upgrade the MB the only real difference you can make is CPU and Skuzzy mentioned the E8400 which is exactly what I was using when I ran that board with AH and the same GPU SLI setup you have. You will get a few more graphics active that way but not much more than you have now.

Your PSU is too limited to upgrade with bigger Nvidia cards (SLI) so if you do end up getting more GPU you will want to use a PSU calculator to determine how much more you can add to your current load and go with a single card. Go too big and your hitting into the bucks again. Forget SLI with anything bigger than 260s which I dont recommend anyway due to bandwidth limitations of your board. A 580 will likely draw more juice than you have to offer and cost more than you want to spend either way.

Best option: E8400.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

Thanks to all that replied, much appreciated.   :aok   :salute

Short term:  Looks like I'll be exploring my CPU/MEM Over Clocking options in the short term.

Long term:  I'll be saving up and planning for a new CPU/MB/MEM/PSU.  I'll proably go the transplant route as I don't need another full rig in the house at this time.

Any tech instructors out there that want to take on a new student in the school of Over Clocking?  PM me.
