If a small bird has the unnatural scent of a human on it, it will be abandoned by its parents to fend on its own
I think that has been proven false. It's what I've always been told but seems to be incorrect.

It was alone when we found it. Yes, we went digging for worms. Also, it appears to have lost its tail feathers (1 left) by a fight or something else. Any suggestions on where to put it to rehabilitate (no not the backyard)? Currently the bird is in a box with a little paper. Also, how many worms?

Mtnman said it much more eloquently than I could have, follow his advice and release it asap.If it has any chance of surviving the soon it's released the better.

I hadnt considered the legal ramifications but yes being a songbird it is illegal to posses but you'd have to get caught.

I have a robins nest on my house, they nest every year there,I expect the babies to fledge any day now. I never bother them and often find atleast 1 thats been killed by the local cats!

Wtg iron650.  I'm thinking we all need a little help now and then.
Don't hate a bird for missing a few feathers.  :)

Take it to the vet.

I know a lot of Vets, and the rule of thumb is "a sick bird is a dead bird".

Cats gotta eat too.  It's like my parents house. They have several feeders that the local pigeons love to frequent.  So does the local sharp-shinned hawk.  He will perch on a telephone pole behind the house. Several times a year wefind a big cloud of feathers in the yard.  My dad has watched him take several.  It's like a grenade going off when the hawk hits them.
