Ditched or proxy?
« on: June 09, 2011, 05:58:05 AM »
I was fighting the other day and pinged a plane pretty good. He skidded into the ground and lived. I was about 1.5 away when I was hoping for the kill and then he ditched, however when someone augers nearby you get a proxy. Or you get a kill on final approach because the guy you wounded pretty good augered or got shot down half way across the arena.  What are the parameters for ditching vs proxy? How close do you need to be for a proxy?

To begin with, augering is crashing fatally into the ground, ditching is when you are able to walk away. There are no parameters for ditching vs augering, it's more like ditch vs capture.

But enough nitpicking:

Ditch="landing" not on pavement but anywhere inside friendly territory. Territory ownership being determined by closest base (including cv)
If you land in enemy territory = captured. A proxy may be possible.

The kills "halway across the arena" isn't a proxy either. You pingend him, so it'S a "regular" kill. Proxy is only when you get a kill due to proximity: Someone dies, nobody can rightfully claim the kill (for example when he just crashed) and you happen to be very close to him at the moment of death.

I am not even sure if being close will get you a proxy "kill". I watched one guy attack a flight of buffs pinging the leader before breaking off to set up another attack. In the meantime the pinged leader dived away leaving his drones behind which promptly exploded! - I called the attacker up who was still nearby and asked if he got the kills. He said no, only the lead plane which he had by now finished off.

It seems to me that to get a proxy i.e. a kill without hitting the enemy, you need to be in some sort of attacking attitude. Such as when you chase some-one down without shooting and they crash in front of you. That in my view is a valid "kill" anyway.

Accidental proxies - like when some-one augers nearby and you were not actively attacking are IMO just a bit of luck. As for how close they need to be, I get the impression not more than say 1000 yds - Just my guess as I don't recall seeing distant proxies.

I must admit I nearly alway try to put a few rounds into the drones when attacking a flight, especially from side on attacks when I can "rake" the flight. I tend to go for the drones first when rear quarter attacking. Point being, if you kill the leader and he does not bail and you have at least pinged the rest of the flight, the drones will also become kills. - Sorry its a bit Gamey, but I don't like them getting away for nothing!  - And I am pretty sure I have been on top of drones that have exploded and not got a proxy (Kind of annoying when you are just about to pull the trigger!)

There is no such thing as any "attitude check" by the program. It's always simply proximity. Regarding to bomber formations and proxies: to me it seems it's always the leader's distance to you that determines if you are in proxy range or not, even when it's only about the drones and those being much closer to you

I don't think there is anything wrong with doing it that way. :)

I would not doubt that! - My perception is no doubt clouded by the way it seems to happen when I get them.

Another point for Fud. - Being near in itself will not get you the kill if someone else is nearer  ;)
