Woodpile rotting
« on: June 09, 2011, 07:27:59 PM »
I have a pile of Maple that has been sitting for @ 3 years, most of it is still rounds.  I started splitting some more today and noticed that some of it is starting to rot.  I do have them stacked on a pallet.  My question is, would removing all the bark help slow down the rot?  Most of it is loose and I do plan on splitting the rest of it as time and weather permits. Yes, I split by hand with an ax and a maul depending on the size.

Thanks.

Maple wood is full of sap, that too invotes rot that much quicker.

best bet right now, split it and burn it sooner then later if possible. once it starts rotting its an ivitation for all sorts of termites and the sorts.

As others have said, once it's started rotting it's a bit late, best to split it and use it up first now while its still got some good in it.  Keeping it up off the ground was a good start, but you should of tarped them or had them covered too.
