Mixed emotions on this decision. Then again I was furious when the Army switched from my beloved BDU's to those piece of **** ACU's. I have never hated a piece of clothing more.   :old:

As for the Beret, I always thought it looked good while on garrison duty and with Class A's. Now lets hope they hurry up and decide to issue the MCU for everyday use and not just for Afghanistan deployments.

My dad loved the switch from Army OD green work pants and shirts to the BDU setup.

I sure didn't. I was still in when that change was made and wore my fatigues until the very last damn day they were authorized. I had several sets of the "summer" fatigues. They were light weight, fitted you better and were very easy to keep looking good. They were really wash and wear and did not really need starching for everyday wear. The original BDU's were heavy, hot, shapeless bags that were and are dangerous around moving machinery. The inside of a tank is kind of close quarters and having the shirt tail flapping around near the turret ring was not comfortable at all. Yeah you could later get some "light weight" BDU's but they were still hotter to wear than the old fatigues and didn't become available for more than a year after the mandatory transition date had passed.

I fully agree with the idea of a camo combat uniform but not for stateside garrison duty. Besides the old woodland camo pattern didn't make much sense in the SW or the sandbox either for that matter.

Very true. I always thought the Rangers deserved to keep the black berets and we should have had the tan ones. Not as sharp but way more respectful to the guys and traditions that earned them.

Mine is field-ready for 72 hours (food/water), plus clothes for longer and lives in my Wrangler, 24/7 (unless I am wearing it, of course)

Them Alice packs are awesome, aren't they? I guess now's a good time for me to buy one, I could get a GI one on the cheap at the Surplus Store in town but I've got a few buddies that bought rucks from Blackhawk and such which were just custom packs on Alice frames. But at this point I don't want to buy something that I wouldn't get to actually use in uniform, I've got Jansport's and Kelty's if I want to ruck on my own time and they're great.

Here's what I'm talking about:

I've had mine since 1990 :rock

The only thing I have had to change are the straps.  It is a large one, so it holds enough survival gear to keep two folks going for a few days.  Couple gallons of water, freeze dried food/MRE's, flint/steel/tinder, homemade mini camp stove (made from coffee can for boiling water) flares, campden tabs, hatchet, knife, 2 sleeping bags/rubber b*tch's, small two-man tent, (2) 100' lengths of 550 cord (one black, one green), spare box of ammo for the .22, first aid kit, flashlight(and extra batteries), signal mirror, fishing line/hooks, TP/baby wipes, (2) extra packs of smokes(of course), extra clothes and a Willie Peter bag to keep it all dry.

I'm sure I forgot a few goodies that I have in there, but it comes in a hair under 50 lbs, including the water.

We live near enough to the Appalachian trail and the N.J. Pine Barrens to make impromptu day trips or go off-roading whenever we want.  Basically, I can go hiking with the wife at a moment's notice and not have to worry about coming home if it get's too late.

I've been told that the MOLLE packs are more combat appropriate and modular, but I sure love my ALICE pack  :rock

The berets belong to the guys who went the extra mile in training to earn them.  When I wore my Army BDU's, I had no problem with my camo baseball cap.  Kept the sun off my eyes and with my shaved head very little sweat.

I still think the old green fatigues were more comfortable then the BDU's.
