Ki-45
« on: June 18, 2011, 11:28:53 AM »
The Toryu was a Japanese heavy fighter. The Toryu fought the Flying Tiger. It was a bomber destroyer and was used as a long-range bomber escort.

Here's the specs for the Ko:

Crew: 2
Length: 36ft 1in
Wingspan: 49ft 4in
Height: 12ft 2in
Wing area: 344 feet squared
Empty weight: 8,820lbs
Loaded weight: 12,125lbs
Engines: 2 Mitsubishi Ha-102 14-cylinder radial engines, 1,050 hp each
Max speed: 336mph
Range: 1,243mph
Service ceiling: 32,800ft
Rate of climb: 2,300ft/min

Armament:
2 12.7mm machine guns in nose
1 20mm cannon in the belly
1 trainable 7.92mm machine gun in rear cabin

The Ko was used as an example. The Toryu would be an interesting bomber destroyer. The anti-ship model was able to carry 2 250kg bombs. Currently, there's no twin engine Japanese fighter in AH. How about the Bristol Beaufort, too?

The Ki-44 was the Tojo.

The Ki-45 was the Nick.

I would love to see this plane. For MA use it sure would be nice to have the one with the 37mm and the 20mm cannons.

Also the Ki-102 would be a great addition as well. A couple of twin engine Japanese attack planes would be fun.

+1  :aok

Interesting Wiki post about the original Ki-45  :D

"The Ki-45 was initially used as a long-range bomber escort. The 84th Independent Flight Wing (Dokuritsu Hikō Chutai) used them in June 1942 in attacks on Guilin, where they encountered, but were no match for Curtiss P-40s flown by the Flying Tigers. In September of the same year, they met P-40s over Hanoi with similar results. It became clear that the Ki-45 could not hold its own against single-engine fighters in aerial combat."

Also:

"It was subsequently deployed in several theaters in the roles of interception, ground, ship attack and fleet defense. Its greatest strength turned out to be as an anti-bomber interceptor, as was the case of the Bf 110 in Europe. In New Guinea, the JAAF used the aircraft in an anti-ship role, where the Ki-45 was heavily armed with one 37 mm (1.46 in) and two 20 mm cannons and could carry two 250 kg (550 lb) bombs on hard points under the wings. 1,675 Ki-45s of all versions were produced during the war."

+1 for this version

-1 for version with only two 12.7mm in nose (you would be shooting b17s until the cow come home and you were out of ammo). yup bomber interceptor lol

Both the Mossie and Bf110 are overmatched VS a single engine fighter.

It would be an interesting addition.
