I agree Masherbrum ... and he's got to be in his 50's ..

He'll be 59 in September bro.   :rofl      He's kept himself in fantastic physical shape.

Neil is a rare breed of drummer and this is coming from a drummer of 14 years.     After Presto he wanted to become more of a craftsman of his instrument.   He went to Freddie Kruger (Buddy Rich's roommate IIRC) and started to use a "traditional grip".    He wasn't ready to implement it by the time Roll The Bones came around.    So after RTB, he switched and to this day, EVERY new song he uses a "traditional grip", while EVERY Pre-Counterparts tune is drummed "matched grip".

Also of note, he uses the "heavy end of the stick" facing outwards.    But, to switch grips and be just as crisp as the other, is NOT as easy as it seems.    I love Portnoy, but it's because of the former that Neil is possibly the Greatest Rock Drummer alive.    Not to mention he writes the lyrics to every tune and doesn't even sing them (which is also difficult).

I like Rush but I was into AC/DC hard core . After they carked down on smoking I quit going .

Good grief - Rush is comprised of actual musician's...LOL

I'm not a drummer (guitar player), but have you bangers ever heard of a drummer named Gavin Harrison?  Plays for a prog rock group called Porcupine Tree out of GB.

Here's a live version of their 17 minute epic 'Anesthatize'  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKG7ngWWx9w of their 2007 album, "Fear of a Blank Planet".

On a side note, Alex Lifeson played the guitar solo on the studio version of this song, and they played this CD during the intermission of the 2007 'Snakes and Arrows" tour.

Everyone has likes and dislikes - no problem MB.

/Hijack....These guys can be very subtle and do take several listens to fully appreciate the fullness and richness of their playing and songwriting.

What tracks or CD's did you listen to?

I last saw Rush at the Verizon Amphitheater just North of Atlanta when the Snakes and Arrows CD came out.  Great show as always.  I think they had the chicken rotisseries on stage, instead of the clothes dryers I saw before that.   :rock

This was from Letterman's declaring a "drum solo week" with drum solos performed at least once per show with different guest drummers.

Shiela E. did a great solo but many of the other guests fell flat.

Anton Figg greatly underplayed seemingly on purpose during his solo....probably so as not to intimidate the guests by setting the bar too high as I've seen him play amazingly powerful and complex solos before.
