Terrain effects!
« on: June 26, 2011, 03:11:20 PM »
The real world world isn't made of concrete.  It'd be nice if there was a difference between the runways and the rest of the world.  Running off the runway on takeoff should feel (and sound) like grass.  Ditching on water should feel like water (and if your plane started sinking, even cooler).  Related - force feedback effects for expansion joints in the runway, for grass, water and other surfaces, would be awesome.

Related related- if craters were more than cosmetic, cratering runways would be a good tactic.  Possibly TOO good, if simpling bombing the spawnpoints completely shut down an airfeild.  However if the craters didn't last long (and in reality filling them in was high priority) this could be quite fun.  One way around the total shutdown of runways (as well as easy CAP vulching) would be to add dispersal pads, and the ability to spawn at them.  And of course you can always take off on the grass....  ;)  Perhaps this is a bridge too far, but something to consider.

Related related related - if you take Google Earth to the Stanley airfield in the Falkland Islands, you can still see the chain of craters left by the first Black Buck mission, with the runway patched right where the last bomb hit it.  Historical coolness.

So you're asking for someone to have the ability to make it so you cannot take off by bombing the runway over and over and over?

That doesn't sound like it would be very fun, paying money to sit in the tower.

Everything else sounds dandy. It should work for GVs too. Road speed being greater than cross-country speed but then we would need roads that are safe to drive on.

The real terrain effects I want to see are radar being blocked by mountains.

The bombing the runway effect is long gone, and I'm sure it won't be back.  As for the rest of your stuff, the "feeling the terrain" more, it'll come with time.  That takes coding and better computers, HTC is careful to keep many low end computers able to run Aces High.

Would be nice though, if you had to ditch in the drink, it sounded like water.  There's even dust trails behind the plane, when we do ditch in the water.    :old:

Your's looks like water spray.  The stuff I had was just like from behind a gv.
I'll take a screen shot next time.

But people are talking about subs.  I think our water is too hard for that.  We need a softener or something.

i think so too. there would have to be a limit though, to how deep one could go in a sub, because it would a) take forever to bump/code/whatever the seabed, and b) it would slow things down... alot.
