if it is true that you can't hear the enemy engine sounds then why not just keep externals off during flight unless in a massive group? and also keep the pilot's engine maxed for realism? as of now we can hear an enemy 800 out with engine on. engine off approx 3K.

If I do, it is because the historical pilot had it backwards as well. I remember what I read, I just wish I could remember the famous stick that was well known for saying it also.

Robert Johnson in Thunderbolt.  He was telling about a fight with a BF-109 where he used lag displacement roll to get a firing solution on the enemy plane. 
  For most people the sky is the limit.  For a pilot the sky is home.
