Agreed, Germany gave up the initiative in the winter of 42 with the fall of the 6th Army at Stalingrad. From that time forth it was pretty much a delaying action on the German end. Granted the German army in the first half of 43 was still potent force but even at Kursk all it was supposed to be was a limited action to correct the salient into the German lines, not a major strategic move.

Actually, I'm a firm believer that war in the East was lost in the Winter of 1941/42. The two biggest objectives of Barbarossa (Moscow and Leningrad) were not captured before the winter had set in. Casualties that Winter for the German army were staggering and if it wasn't for the failures of Red Army command and the deplorable weather they could have dealt a crushing defeat that winter.

While the Southern front held in 41/42, the resources needed to stop a major counter offensive in the North might of changed the course of the war in Russia. That's all speculation but it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility. The Germans held and in the Spring the attention of the Army was changed to that horrible city on the Volga. The Northern Front never really changed after that winter until the retreats of 1943.
