Three Wishes (Again)
« on: July 07, 2011, 06:13:48 PM »
Saw the cockpit photos of the upcoming P-40E.  Very nice indeed.  That let me know that changes were again in the wind. (Last one dropped me from HiRes to Low Res - hope I can still hang in there.)

So, here's my annual list in case there is a chance.

Plane Wishes:
1) Ki-43 (5,000+ built and flown during WW-II. It was tha Japanese Army Fighter)
2) Yak-3 (Out peformed the Yak-9 even though the number is lower.)
3) A6M3 (I know there is one, but the roll rate should be significantly faster (IMO) than it's brothers, much like the Spit-14 Vs the clipped wing Spit-16.)

Thanks for listening...

Yay for Google!  Search on: A6M3 "roll rate".  Seems pretty common and consistent info from multple sources.  Here is a sample.

Quote
Undoubtedly the most widely built Japanese fighter of WWII, the A6M was seen in all theaters were the Japanese Navy operated. As good as the earlier A6M2 was, it was realized that more speed and somewhat better roll rate were needed. In order to meet this need, the A6M3, type 32 was developed. This version had a more powerful engine and the folding wing tips were replaced with 'clipped' tips that squared off the wing shape. Pilots had mixed feelings about the aircraft as clipping the wing tips did provide a higher roll rate, ...

Quote
The wing changes had much greater effects on performance than expected. The smaller size led to better roll, and their lower drag allowed the diving speed to be increased to 360 knots (670 km/h).

Search for yourself. ;-)

Thanks Slade for the backup.

I flew the A6M3 for years in WarBirds along with it's two brothers.  It was by far my favorite with its much faster roll rate even though the A6M5 had better guns.

I have stop watched the roll on the A6M2, A6M3 and A6M5 in AH at the same speed (225 mph) and I can see no difference in the three.  The comparison I mentioned above (Spit-14 Vs Spit-16) is really very much like the the difference between the A6M5 and the A6M3.

I really hope AH will make the change. - kw

The A6M3 does have a better roll rate.

What are you comparing it to, the Dora? Spixteen?

Compare it to the A6M2 and 5b. It has a better roll rate.

Howdy Joe.

Just did it again at 225 MPH at A1 in TA with 50% fuel load.  Timed all three at 6 seconds for a complete roll. - kw
