I had a poster of the second image growing up.

And a Major Matt Mason with a jet pack.  And a Sgt Storm too.   Pretty cool toys, hours of imaginative fun.   Every end table in the house became a lunar mountain.

You know the Jetsons portrayed flying cars by the year 2000 and interplanetary travel, here it is 2011 and we aren't even close  :cry

Our lack of that is not because of lack of technology but lack of desire.  While there are certainly plenty of people willing to drive flying cars and to travel to other planets there are two BIG reasons why this hasn't really happened yet:

1> Profitability.  If there is no money to be made then no company is going to pursue it.  Reason #2 factors into this a great deal!  This leads to only Government and Non-profit programs to develop these things and when times get tough these are usually the first kinds of programs to go.  Look at the cancellation of the Shuttle program for an example.

2> Accountability.  Here's the deal.  You think a flying car is a FANTASTIC IDEA!  You know thousands of people ready to invest RIGHT NOW in one and you know that your development will be an instant success!  So you spend millions of dollars developing a flying car knowing that you're going to make ten-fold that amount!  You sell a few hundred units and are JUST STARTING to see your finances in the black and pulling a profit.  Then some moron hits a power line and their flying car slams into a family of five in a sub-compact pushing it into a busy restaurant which explodes killing dozens of people.  Guess what the survivors and the families of the deceased are going to do?  That's right.  You get sued.  You file bankruptcy and close your doors and end up just as broke as you were to begin with.  After that no one else DARES to develop a flying car for fear of the same result.

Simply put yes the technology is there but the infrastructure is lacking.  The desire is there but there is no protection from idiots in a world full of ambulance chasers.  It's simply not feasible at the moment to make these things happen, especially when people are struggling to keep their gas tanks full in a car that gets 30-40MPG.  Imagine what their fuel bill would be if they drove a flying car!
