The P-40F did not get the same Merlin as the P-51 used. Early Merlins (Spits 1-5, Hurris, Lancs, early Mossies etc) had a single stage supercharger, like the Allison. This gave good performance at low/med alts.

Later Merlins (Spit 8, 9, 16, P-51B,C,D, later Mossies etc.) had a two stage supercharger, at higher alts the second supercharger kicked in giving greatly improved performance.

If the Mustang had been given the same early Merlin as the P-40F it would not have improved it much at all. Curtiss (and Lockheed) wanted the later Merlins but they never got them.

I redid the cockpit once but it had some 60 modified, edited, or heavily edited files in the bundle not counting the exerior skin itself. HTC rejected it (I imagine because it was too much work for an old 2D cockpit!), but IMO it looked a lot better than the stock P-40E cockpit.

Hrm... I tried to find a screenshot of my efforts but couldn't The best I can do is a partial screenshot of in-progress work (by no means complete) of the custom cockpit:

Edit2: Just for comparison, the new one... They made a few improvements!

No, the XP-40Q was powered by an Allison V-1710-121, making 1,800 hp in WEP.

Anyone else find any hidden notes/names besides "WAFFLE" in the new P40E?    :D
