TrackIR version.5.1 How-To?
« on: July 29, 2011, 03:02:42 AM »
I finally got me one of these contraptions.  I have the latest version 5.1 using a nVidia GTX 260 video card.

I have the hat clip with the 3 relective strips and I also have the newer 3 LED clip-on to the headset earphones ( my headset is Plantronics Gamecom).

I have played with it but I actually get a little bit motion sickness using it, kind of nauseas.  I am looking for smoothness and full look-around range back to the tail.  Is there any way to get that dam headrest out of my rear looking view?

I am looking for settings using Aces High.

I used it flying the pattern in a P-51D.  No way am I ready for combat using this as is.

I did a search as to include ALL boards, and separately as individual forums like here and to the Hardware and Software forum.  Seems odd nothing comes up even in advanced search.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate-64 bit using Norton 360; I have a separate drive Windows 7 Home-32 bit with Windows Advantage (I run the game with anti-virus off and no firewall on this drive, Aces High specfic, I'm using currently); and will soon setup a 3rd drive as partially Windows XP Pro-32 bit which will also be Windows Advantage.  I see no real inprovement running Windows 7 Home-32 bit compared to 64 bit.  I do need to thin my processes and Alacrity should work in 32 bit mode.

I have 12 gigs ram, about 1,000 gigs video ram, and an Intel i7-920 cpu.

Has anybody done a good write-up how-to using TrackIR ?  Or a book?  Or a "Dummies" book?  LOL!

I use CH Products controllers.

Thanks for any help.

Here is a good writeup from a long time AH player (see link in first post). It's not v5.1, but same principles apply:

Daubie,

I may be mistaken but if you have 12 gigs of ram any 32bit OS would be a waist.Unless they changed the ram addressing limit of XP32bit in Win7 32bit you have about 8 gigs sitting there doing nothing.
So I'd stick with a 64 bit OS of your choice and get the most out of that system.Sure go ahead and install those other setups but I dont think they'll utilize all that ram, dont forget to include the vidram when you check the ram addressing limit.

   :salute

PS: I dont use trackIR so I'm of no help to you there.

True, 32-bit uses about 3 gigs ram tops.  Ever play DCS: A-10C Warthog in 64-bit?  6 gigs should be enough, but their AI was killing my frame rates.  6 more gigs fixed that!

Getting a stable overclock with that much ram may be an issue.  I'm still learning...

I think my Aces High in 32 bit runs a bit faster than in 64 bit.

Nothing is a waste when experimenting.

I think my DSL is my major hurdle.  For me, it is a big deal roughing in cable under my house to get Road Runner, but it is on my to do list, one of these days.

Thanks for the reply.

I have TIR 5.1 and win 7 x64.

For me setup is quite simple. I select the "smooth" profile for AH.

Then, make sure that in AH you have programmed a button for centering the TIR. This is very useful if you have to get up then come back and sit down or if you just move around a bit and your center point changes.

In AH, under view prefs, I shoose TIR relative move.

Werks 4 me.

Took me about a tour to get used to it. No I will not fly without it.

Thanks for any help.

I have TIR 4 with Pro-Clip and use the TIR 5 software, and full CH setup. Works great and I can fairly easily see around the headrest on the late-model Corsairs, etc.

My profile is a bit aggressive...sitting 3 feet from my 24" widescreen, I only point my nose at the edge of the monitor and my in-game head is looking 180. I have a small dead spot at the very middle, to keep my view steady while looking straight ahead (I tend to move around a little in my chair).

If you go to Google and type the following into the search bar, you'll find lots of posts...and it only took 0.25 seconds to bring back results.  :aok

    site:bbs.hitechcreations.com "track ir 5"

You get this page as a result. Good hunting.  :D

I still have working a IRTracker 3 and it still works fine.   I have used it right out of the box without making any additional setting adjustments and it works for me as advertised.

My advise to new users is use it as it was delivered for a few weeks before jumping in and changing the profile settings.   Learn how the movement of your head effects the resulting view.   Get very comfortable with it before changing any of the default setting.

One thing I noticed was that the my background lighting had be to consistent with no supper bright lighting ,  that did cause problems.   Mostly bright sun light through a window.  Black out shades always drawn eliminated the problem.

The side effect of the movement inducing motion sickness will pass.  Ginger ale or ginger cookies can be a big help.

If my unit stopped working today, I'd replace it with a new unit.  it's worth it to me.

You also don't want any bright sunlight coming from behind you onto the camera. I had that situation and could not fly in the morning.

Now, my office is arranged so that the sunlight comes in and hits me, but the camera only sees me and is not looking at the window. Works great.

The view to the rear may be tough since it will be more realistic then some are used to.  With the hat switches you can set the default rear view to some crazy angle that allows you a rearward view that wouldn't be possible in real life.  With the trackir there are two things to consider.  First, since you are using the hat clip, the centering of the reflectors in the camera's view is very important.  If it is off by too much you will have a hard time looking back 180, much less looking back 180 AND being able to slide your head over to see around the seat.

If you like I'd be happy to give you a copy of my TrackIR profile for Aces High as would any number of us.  I have mine set for minimal head movement and smooth tracking with a very steady center.  Feel free to PM.
