I was making a bomb run in a single B29 to get a feeling what kind of plane it was in action. I first dropped half the load to a bish base and ran into a Spit that was gaining alt and it seemed that he was no too keen to have a shot at me. After drop I turned for a knit base that was handily nearby and dropped rest of the load there and turned for home in a slight descent.
However, I didn't observe that my speed was building up and at some point I pulled up and *BANG!* my elevators flew off and the plane started to go into a steep climb. I pulled back on the throttle and started to drop flaps when the speed had dropped out enough and regained control of the aircraft. I proceeded to fly towards our base by managing the descent with throttles and flaps and direction with rudder and suddenly noticed that there was a knit K4 on my 6oc closing fast.
K4 driver knew better than to close in for the kill straight away and flew to my side and attacked. We exchanged fire for awhile and I got his engine and I also registered a hit and something flying off my plane. After K4 was going down and checking that there was no other plane around I checked damage log and saw that my rudder was also gone now.
At this stage I was well past my base and started to limp back with only my ailerons, throttle and flaps for control and as it happened I managed to land the plane in one piece straight on the runway. Somehow I got a feeling that all the luck I was to have with B29 was spent on that single sortie.
