Idea for a tank
« on: August 05, 2011, 08:59:16 AM »
Im sure it has been brought up before, but what about the M26. The king tiger wasnt really in service much longer than the 26. A year tops.

I'm not sure what qualifies 'squadron strength' for a ground vehicle. If its a battalion, then this thing doesn't meet requirments for addition to the game.

Also to enlighten any that have the wrong idea, the M26 Pershing is no where near a match for the Tiger II. It was, overall, slightly superior to the Tiger I, but not to any great degree. Picture a Tiger I with slightly thicker armor and you have what is essentialy the M26.

I love the M26 was starting to work on one we brought back from Bosnia before I retired. At any level the M26 would be a great addition to having stand up fights at long range. +1

I believe the pershing saw squadron-sized action at remagen, and recorded a long-range kill on a panther.

I'm sure what it is; it's 4 to 5 tanks.

Never compared it to the T2 in strength or ability, just in length of service or introduction to service.

Here's some specifications - I will continue reading to see how many battalions were combat ready-
Crew:5
Combat Weight 46.1 tons
Armament: M3 90mm gun in M67 Mount
Main Gun ammo: 70 rounds (M82 APC, T30E16 HVAP, T33 APBC-T, M71 HE)
Muzzle Velocity: 2650 fps (M82)
Penetration 120mm @30 degrees @ 500 yards (M82 APC)
221mm @30 degrees @500 yards (T30e16 HVAP)
Max Speed: offroads 20mph, Roads 30mph
Maximum effective Range: 21,400 yards
Armor: 115mm gun mantlet, 76mm Turret sides, 100mm hull upper front, 76mm Hull lower front, 50-75mm hull sides

Best described the M-26 in official reports as "not enough action, to late in the war"
They were issued to the Ninth Army and divided between teh 2nd Armored Division (22 tanks) and the 5th Armored division (18 tanks)

So it was combat strength, however with the crippled German Army the M-26 really didn't see enough of the war to be added.

Also it had way to many Mechanical problems that wern't fixed until October of 1945, mainly because it used the same engine as the M4A3 Sherman.
My best guess is it wouldn't be added to the game for the same reason the Meteor wasn't added.

A squadron is somewhere around 24 aircraft, why whould a 'squadron' of tanks be 3-4? 3 tanks makes an understrength platoon.

I believe that an Armored Brigade (im using a Brigade because it is roughly right smack dab in the middle of the smallest and largest unit structures) there were anywhere between 120-200 Tanks. Obviously it would depend on a myriad of things, but lets just say that if a BDE had 160 Tanks....then a BDE is broken down into 3-4 Battalions, so 40 Tanks per BAT, 10 per Comp, and 2-3 Per Platoon. Im just giving a general perspective. I was a ground pounder so I cannot say with any accuracy if this is exact, but its a rough guesstimate...thoughts?

I'd say company (between 10-24 tanks depending on whos country its from), in which case the M26 just barely slides by.
