I think for many players, the combination of alcohol with a general competitive drive means that while they might not instigate a verbal fight, once provoked, they wont back down. So although it may be a nice sound bite to say that, in reality, its not too realistic/pragmatic.
I think in general, its better to say, don't be a 'a-hole' unless its warranted (aka provoked, etc..). Also, its important to note that what might seem like joking banter between some, may be misinterpreted as one can't see your face or your body language.
