Cap, the shaft let go up front and folded in half, that lifted the rear wheels and it slid on it's front bumper for quite a ways then caught the ditch and rolled on it's side......nasty!

Ink, IIRC it was a challenger with the T/A striping and whatnot,it was a 340 6pack for sure,it had a wicked rapping noise when it pulled in and he shut it down. Then he started it up blipped the gas a couple times and she let go,I had to spray it with the extingisure because the oil was about tostart the car on fire.  Made 1 huge mess of our lot!! :devil

Racing in NHRA Super Stock class on 7-inch (180 mm)-wide tires, the Thunderbolt was based on the mid-level Fairlane 500 two-door pillared sedan, and in 1964 set elapsed time and top speed records at 11.6 seconds and 124 mph (200 km/h), .[4] took the Super Stock title, and won the Manufacturer's Cup; it is probably the quickest and fastest production drag racer ever produced.

 this was something i hadn't known......lightweight galaxies(2) were built with 289's? and ran 12's?

The first two lightweight Galaxies, using 289 cu in (5 l) bodies, were assembled at Fort Wayne, Michigan, late in January 1963, to be tested at the 1963 Winternats.[8] They were delivered to Tasca Ford (East Providence, R.I.) and Bob Ford (Dearborn, MI).[8] Bill Lawton's Tasca Galaxie turned the best performance, with a 12.50 pass at 116.60 mph

hey no ones perfect....but they over looked the fastest by far of them all

mid 10's 68 barracuda

fastest quarter mile American muscle car ever made

and incidentally  another little factoid for you "ford" and "chevy" guys the first car to ever hit 200 mph in the quarter mile was a Challenger  :neener:

(Image removed from quote.)

Also in 1968, Chrysler made approximately 50 fastback Barracudas equipped with the 426 cu in (7.0 L) Hemi for Super Stock drag racing.[2] These cars were assembled by Hurst Performance and featured lightweight items such as lightweight Chemcor side glass, fiberglass front fenders, and hood with scoop, lightweight seats, and sound deadener and other street equipment such as rear seats omitted. An included sticker indicated that the car was not for use on public roads; it could run the quarter-mile in the mid-10s in 1968.[2]

you sure it wasn't something with pontiac power/?

"super stock" is a pretty highly modified class.
