PC crash ??

Ok...now I have a problem where when I try to use Fraps, look at a movie from an external hard drive...and the latest was when I tried to take a screenshot last night...my PC gets a black dos screen with blue and white writing...mainly numbers...this is vauge I know but it flashes really fast so I don't get to see what is up on the screen...then it re boots and performs a dicsk check....I have no idea where or what to even look for....I have added nothing extra to my pc since the last time I used Fraps which was about 2 mths ago....

Is there anything off the top of your heads that I could look for..it must be a corrupt file of some sort  but I have no idea of what or where to start.

all other things work..I can look at my pics and movies that or on my pc..I can take screenies from the film viewer, game runs fine,in fact other than the crashing at these times it all runs sweet...but as I say last night took...or should say tried to take a screen shot ingame and bang crashed hard...

any thoughts

what version of windows and what else do you have running when it happens?

Oops  sorry  ....XP home ....with fraps I have the film viewer open ...only noticed the external hard drive issue the other day..I can open anything else just not movies...If I click on the thumbnail it crashes......the screen shot was in game and so processes were trimmed down...As to what is running in the back ground I would need to have a look and write it down if needed...

Also I can get, look at and copy to a folder pics from my camera...and also no issue with My iphone...just thought I would add these as they are two external devices that I can look at and move pics and movies around without issue

try reinstalling Fraps.....sounds corrupted.....

you said external HD...... can you copy to your regular HD and watch it then?

No...as soon as I click the thumbnail/avi file it crashes...I can move any other type of file no worries though......Hard case thing is, (in regard to in game screenshots) I auto film all my sorties...but taking a screeny crashes it

if it's crashing as soon as you try to watch it, it is probably the film viewer that is in question not FRAPS... at least that's where I'd start looking.

Did you install any extra videocodecs to your computer?

my film viewer/aces high will crash every time they're open and then I open fraps.  then i must reboot as they will only keep crashing.  I must open fraps first then ah/film viewer.  not sure why, but I think it's always been this way.

Not knowingly.....could have in an update I spose...I don't have auto update running but I do update and really don't look at what is within the update...I am naive in that respect and hope that they are genuinely honest updates.

   I had to do the same thing semp...although it wouldn't crash..fraps just wouldn't work...The program opened and all but it wouldn't record.  The issue I have now is just hard for me to explain and seemed to happen from nothing...I'm sure there is something I have done I just can't think of what it could be as in the past I have messed up my PC by doing stupid stuff to it.....but nothing of late (2-3 years)...I got old and couldn't be bothered anymore....Plus having to fix the kids PC's now because they are doing the tutu'n that I used to do  ...I was training myself

Cheers guys for having a look at this and trying to help with the small and layman description I gave...I'm thinking of just re installing windows as it has been years since I gave the PC a good clean up (not that I do much on it..Game and banking hahaha)....would love to get a new one but alas this is not to be at this stage...

If it crashes when taking a screenie Tongs, check the size of your file/folder - might have too much in there, causing excessive write time (hence it crashing). Or, you might need to reinstall the game/fraps completely as something is buggered.

could also change the save folder onto a different drive if you have one.

it sounds like some file is corrupted....I would reinstall everything...have the films saved into a different drive...and put fraps on a different drive then AH..if ya can, other wise go through and delete films as often as needed to keep the size of the folder down.
