Convertable B-17'S?
« on: October 04, 2011, 03:34:18 PM »
Why would some one take this aircraft.

Then turn it into a convertable?

The answer is.

Operation Aphrodite.

This guy would have been president if he hadn't been one of the pilots and blown up.  Instead his little brother gets shipwrecked in the Pacific and is lifted on shoulders into the White House.

Had this plane been successful, there would have been no need to use BQ7 (B-17s) or BQ8s (B-24s) and risk the lives of the flight crews.

Lets see if i understand this right:

they took the B17s, loaded them with explosives, then flew them into bunkers or some other target?. and the b17s were "convertibles" to allow the pilot to bail out.

Is this correct?

It's true they were radio controlled from a mother plane, after the pilot bailed out. The pilot took off got the plane to alt and rough course and when the mother plane had control bailed out. I have a book on the operation somewhere.

That is retarded. Without clicking on any of the links I can tell this probably didn't even work as planned.

Edit: I was right.

Yep, the drone blew up in the air as he was setting the plane to remote control. The target, I believe, was in France to a V-2 rocket test site.

Well, even the Germans tried it. Except theirs were Ju-88s strapped to the bottom of FW-190s.
